Transformation of Health Services: The Role of Big Data in Managing the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced humanity to make effective use of technology, including big data. The use of big data enables the collection and analysis of large amounts of data and supports more accurate decision-making. According to Dr. Techn. Saiful Akbar, “the amount of data available (currently) is vast; the quality and analysis of data are crucial because they directly impact the accuracy of policies” (in Permana, 2020). Therefore, the utilization of big data is vital in pandemic management.

In emergency situations, every decision made must be based on valid and real-time information to yield optimal results. This is further supported by various studies indicating that the use of big data during the pandemic is a key aspect in supporting data-driven decision-making (Haafza et al., 2021). Without accurate and valid data, the decision-making process risks becoming slow and less targeted. Therefore, understanding the role of big data is essential to support the effectiveness of healthcare services, not only during the COVID-19 pandemic but also in preparing for similar crises in the future.

In practice, big data plays a crucial role in supporting the effectiveness of healthcare services during the pandemic. Big data has the ability to integrate data from various sources, such as patient data, hospital data, and data on the daily activities of the public. Consequently, healthcare professionals and the government can monitor population movements and gain an overview of what is happening on the ground. This enables relevant parties to anticipate and implement more efficient and targeted responses. The use of big data also enables the prediction of COVID-19 case developments. With the technical assistance of machine learning, big data can identify and estimate patterns of viral spread. This can help healthcare workers prepare and estimate the capacity and needs of healthcare services, such as bed availability, medical staff, and other support requirements. Research shows that the use of big data can improve prediction accuracy, thereby supporting more effective decision-making (Riswantini et al., 2021).

Not only that, big data can also be utilized in the contact tracing process. Through the use of digital data, individuals at risk of exposure can be identified more quickly, allowing for immediate intervention. This demonstrates that big data serves not only as an analytical tool but also as a means of control in emergency situations (Villanustre et al., 2021). Behind these applications, big data faces various challenges. One of the main factors is the disparity in technology access across regions. Not all areas have easy access to technology, nor do they possess adequate infrastructure to manage data on a large scale. Additionally, concerns regarding data privacy and security have emerged. The collection of large amounts of data carries the potential for information misuse if not strictly regulated. Therefore, clear policies are needed to limit and balance the use of data with the protection of each individual’s data (Gstrein & Zwitter, 2020).

Considering these various aspects, the role of big data in pandemic management depends not only on technology but also on the overall readiness of the system. Equitable infrastructure, competent human resources, and clear policies are critical factors for effectively and optimally utilizing big data.

Based on the discussion above, it can be concluded that big data plays a crucial role in enhancing the effectiveness of healthcare services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ability to process large volumes of data enables faster, more accurate, and valid decision-making. Additionally, big data aids in predicting and controlling the spread of the virus. However, the use of big data must also be balanced by addressing aspects of infrastructure equity and policies regarding data protection and individual privacy.

Recommendations include the need to improve technological infrastructure in underserved areas to ensure equitable access to big data. Furthermore, the government must establish policies that protect personal data to prevent information misuse. Finally, it is essential to enhance the capabilities of competent human resources in data analysis to maximize the use of big data for a better future.
