The dark side of Indian startup boom — Layoffs: Startup & VC Crisis Hits Employees Hard — Real Stories & Impact

Discarded: The Human Wreckage of India’s Startup Boom — And the VCs Who Lit the Fuse

They were promised rocket ships to the moon. Instead, tens of thousands of Indian workers have been strapped to a cruel rollercoaster, funded by reckless Venture Capital (VC) cash and driven by founders whose priorities shift like desert sands. One moment, it’s “grow at all costs, burn the money, hire everyone!” The next, a sudden slam on the brakes: “Profits! Now! Fire them all!” And who is left bleeding on the tracks? The employees. The very people who built these paper empires with their sweat, talent, and an almost naive belief in a brighter future.

This isn’t just about job losses; this is about a betrayal so profound it should make your blood boil. This is about lives systematically dismantled, futures casually incinerated on the altar of “investor confidence” and “market correction.”

For the last 3–4 years, a relentless storm of pink slips has torn through India’s once-glittering startup and tech scene. By the end of 2023, over 38,300 souls had been cast adrift since 2022. Another 7,700+ in 2024 alone. Names that were once poster children for Indian innovation — Byju’s, Ola, Swiggy, Flipkart, ShareChat, and a shameful parade of others — became synonymous with mass firings. These weren’t struggling mom-and-pop shops; these were Goliaths, bloated with millions, sometimes billions, in VC funding.

The VC Casino: Heads They Win, Tails You Lose Your Life

Let’s call this what it is: a high-stakes gamble where the VCs and founders play with people’s lives using someone else’s money. They fuel a hiring frenzy, creating an artificial boom, inflating salaries, and encouraging young professionals to take on massive financial burdens — dream homes, EMIs, an education for their children. They become addicted to “growth metrics,” no matter how unsustainable.

Then, the wind changes. The VCs, often sitting in distant boardrooms, get nervous. They demand “profitability,” a word conveniently forgotten during the champagne-fuelled expansion phase. And how do these celebrated founders often achieve this sudden “efficiency”? By culling their workforce with the ruthless precision of an executioner. Employees, who had absolutely no say in these reckless strategic pivots, are the first and easiest sacrifice. Their loyalty, their hard work, their families’ security — all meaningless when the spreadsheet demands blood.

“My Family Doesn’t Value Me Anymore”: The Silent Screams

The human cost is not some abstract economic data point. It’s the 40-something manager, once earning a handsome salary, now staring at a future where his skills are “outdated” and his experience makes him “too expensive.” As Shantanu Deshpande of Bombay Shaving Company bluntly put it, these are people with kids in college, aging parents to support, and EMIs that don’t pause just because your “visionary” CEO had a change of heart. They are trapped, overqualified for lesser jobs, under-skilled for the new fads, their confidence shattered.

The devastation seeps into the very fabric of their homes. Think of the recent, gut-wrenching LinkedIn post from a man in Mumbai. Laid off, devalued, he confessed that even his wife and daughter no longer respected him, pushing him to the brink of considering suicide. Is this the “New India” we were promised? Where a pink slip means you lose not just your livelihood, but your dignity and your family’s love?

Marriages are crumbling under the weight of sudden unemployment and the crushing shame society heaps upon those who lose their jobs. The EMIs don’t stop. The school fees don’t vanish. The anxiety is a constant, gnawing presence. As one laid-off worker put it, there’s “no dignity,” just cold, impersonal dismissals that leave behind “psychological trauma that never goes away.” People are discarded like yesterday’s trash, their years of service counting for nothing.

From Paycheck to Precipice: The Ultimate Price

And sometimes, the despair becomes a death sentence. The National Crime Records Bureau tells a horrifying story: in 2022 alone, 3,170 suicides in India were directly linked to unemployment. Fifteen thousand, seven hundred and eighty-three people who took their own lives that year were unemployed. Between 2018 and 2020, over 9,140 people died by suicide because they lost their jobs, with thousands more succumbing due to overwhelming debt.

While each tragedy is unique, can we honestly say these numbers are unrelated to the brutal, hire-and-fire culture perfected by these VC-backed firms? When you snatch away a person’s livelihood, their identity, their ability to provide for their loved ones, and offer them nothing but a platitude-filled email, are you not pushing them towards a precipice?

This Is Not Normal. This Is an Outrage.

Companies will spew excuses: “restructuring,” “market realities,” “performance issues” — sometimes even reportedly downgrading stellar employees’ reviews just to make the cut. But the truth is simpler and far uglier: it’s often about protecting profits, ensuring the next funding round, or covering up monumental strategic blunders made at the very top. The employees are just collateral damage.

It’s time we, the public, stop celebrating these “disruptors” when they disrupt human lives with such callous indifference. It’s time the VCs who fuel this destructive cycle, and the founders who execute it, are made to face the storm of public anger. Their pursuit of astronomical valuations and quick exits is built on a mountain of broken careers and shattered dreams.

They should hang their heads in shame. But shame is clearly a luxury they cannot afford, or perhaps, a currency they do not value. The question is, how much longer will we allow them to get away with it? This isn’t just news; it’s a testament to a rot that runs deep. Share this. Talk about it. Let them hear the roar. Because the silence of the laid-off is deafening, and it’s time their stories brought down the temples of this false idol of “growth at any human cost.”
