THE ETHEREUM T̶I̶M̶E̶ WAYBACK MACHINE (EWM)

Would you be disappointed if I told you that the “EWM” won’t let you go back in time to save some Ethereum you probably lost to a bad trade or shitty investment? Well… it can’t do that but it’s here to ensure sustained access to historical blockchain data. It’s like having a time-travelling data wizard as your blockchain wingman!

I came across a tweet from Covalent on the 9th of November where they introduced the EVM and briefly summarized why it matters and how it’s shaping Ethereum’s future and it left me with three questions.

1. What would I do if I knew about the purpose of the Ethereum Wayback Machine?

The EWM hinges on the Covalent Network, ensuring that historical blockchain data is both accessible and readily available. One of the first things that would come to mind would be to study historical transactions. I think this would come naturally to me because as a part-time trader, I am always used to backtesting to see how the market has responded over time for a particular asset.

Now I know that every transaction on the Ethereum blockchain tells a story, so by examining historical transactions with the EVM, I could gain insights into large-scale movements of funds, the frequency of transactions, and the interactions between various addresses. It would help me understand the behaviour of specific wallets.

2. How would I participate in it?

The specifications, source codes, and reference implementations that power the EWM are already open-sourced, which allows me to keep exploring and contributing. I would take the time to explore historical data and gain a deeper understanding of blockchain dynamics. If I were a developer, which thankfully I am not; primarily because those lines of code look intimidating on screen😂, I would leverage the EWM to analyze trends and validate the historical performance of smart contracts. The writer in me would look for opportunities to propose enhancements to make the tool more user-friendly.

A good product can do more good if a lot of people know it exists, so I would help promote awareness by organizing mini-workshops that could kickstart discussions within the blockchain community. 3. What industry problem would I solve?

Transparency is the biggest selling point of the EWM. I would use it to audit as many blockchain projects as possible this would include smart contract changes, token distributions, and transaction histories. This would help mitigate risks associated with project developments, ensuring compliance with initial token offering promises, encouraging trust among users and investors.
