The Day I Misjudged Someone

Wooo, You’ll Never Guess Who It Was

Ok, I want to start by saying I owe someone an apology.

Not the fake one that starts with I’m sorry if I offended you. A real one.

It wasn’t me sending a quick “my bad” text message and moving on either. I had to take a moment and sit with the realization that I was wrong, and the person I misjudged deserved more understanding from me.

She also deserved more patience and grace.

Man, I didn’t even give her the recognition she deserved when I could have.

I spent years expecting her to be stronger, better, more confident, and more certain. I always questioned her decisions, focusing only on the moments where she stumbled.

Like a complete jerk, I conveniently had no problem noticing the goals she had not accomplished yet instead of acknowledging how far she had come. I’m talking from childhood into the present moment- I know, not a good look at all.

The truth is, I had created a version of her in my mind that was completely unfair.

I looked at her through the lens of unrealistic expectations, timelines, and comparisons. I measured her progress by where she thought she should be instead of honoring where she actually was.

And the more I think about it, the more I had to sit with the discomfort I created.

We are often willing to give everyone else grace while holding ourselves to impossible standards.

We tell others that growth is a part of life. This is how we were raised: to remind those we love that mistakes are part of learning and to never give up.

But when it comes to ourselves? We become our own harshest critic.

So, the person I owed an apology to is a woman who has carried more than most people will ever know. Behind the smiles, dedication, long hours, and relentless giving to others… there was a woman who continued showing up even when things were uncertain.

She learned from failures, kept adjusting, wiped her tears, and kept moving forward.

The guilt was so hard to swallow, it felt like a lump of coal in my throat. I should have celebrated this woman more. And because I knew this woman so well… to be honest, that woman was me.

I misjudged myself.

I underestimated my resilience. I overlooked my growth. I forgot to acknowledge the strength it took to become the person I am today.

So, this is my apology:

I am sorry for every time I doubted you, measured your journey against someone else’s, and failed to simply say, I am proud of you and I love you.

Because the truth is, you were never falling behind.

You were right on track. And I should have been cheering for you all along.

But moving forward, I will always celebrate you.

You are amazing. Keep going, girl. You got this!

Muah xoxo
