The big tragedy of manga coming from a foreign country is that a lot of gems get stuck in obscurity. Don’t get me wrong, the English publishers do their best to get as many popular series over to the west, but in the end they’re a slave to popular demand, and even then they can only do so much. As a result, there’s a lot of popular manga that haven’t even seen a localization — hell, Fist of the North Star only started seeing an official translation in the last few years despite having a big impact on the medium all the way back in the 80s.

Zettai Karen Children is not such a storied title, but it is an incredibly long-running one that has yet to make it to the west. The manga follows the adventures of Koichi Minamoto, who is charged with supervising the most powerful espers in the country, who happen to be three young girls. Codenamed “The Children”, these girls are predicted to bring about the end of the world if they aren’t guided well, so it’s up to Minamoto to avert this bad future by teaching them right from wrong.

While ZKC ‘s premise would make for a stellar action series, it’s actually primarily a comedy — for the most part, anyways. Stories are less about climactic battles against evil espers and more about the shenanigans Minamoto gets into as he reins in these rambunctious little girls. Even when the series deigns to introduce antagonists whose goals are opposed to those of the main cast, they aren’t immune to being sources of comic relief, and while it makes them less threatening, it does make them more enjoyable overall as characters.

Even as the series gets more serious and plot-focused, it never forgets its comedic roots, especially with the supplementary 4-komas that often show up at the beginning of chapters to give a quick laugh. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t know how to tell a thrilling, action-packed story, and while the art is a little questionable early on, it quickly improves. As a result, ZKC is both a hilarious comedy series and an exciting action series.

In the end, Zettai Karen Children is fated to be the kind of title that only really leaves the lips of hardcore manga fans who delve deep into the medium to find the hidden gems. A hidden gem it is, however, and any fan of psychic battle manga shouldn’t skip out on this. It’s one of my favorite action-comedy series, and I’ll keep singing its praises even if no one knows what I’m talking about.
