On 18 April 1946, the inaugural sitting of the World Court or International Court of Justice took place.

In 2026 amid flings of war as signs of insolence, the celebration of 80th anniversary of the World Court is going on at its head quarter in Netherlands.

The paradox is, Sudan war is going on for last four years, Russia , US, Israel all are disrespecting the World Court and its norms.

193 countries who are members of the United Nations are members of the World Court.

The website of the International Court of Justice mentioned its work,

“The Court may entertain two types of cases: legal disputes between States submitted to it by them (contentious cases) and requests for advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by United Nations organs and specialized agencies.”

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the World Court, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said,

“The world is at a “moment of crisis” and countries must reaffirm commitment to international law amid rising violations and geopolitical tensions.

The Court continues to be a guarantor that sovereignty and equality are not mere words on paper. It is also a reminder that even overwhelming strength cannot — and must not — replace legal obligations.”
