Medium’s Top-Secret Extra Earnings Lever
TDW #51: Six

Six writers. Six levers. Six cents. Visual ritual conjured with ChatGPT.
The Medium servers groaned as six writers gathered in the dark to find the legendary lever that rains cash on their stories. They needed six ritualistic acts to bypass the algorithm’s defenses.
Mary approached the first lever and wrote a handwritten love letter to the algorithm in tears and ink, pledging eternal devotion to the feed. I frantically blew on the parchment to dry the tear-stained ink before the next feed update.
Next, Vipul handled the second lever: a blood sacrifice to the spam filter goblins. Vipul fed his highest-earning draft into a paper shredder, while I acted as the defense attorney trying to negotiate with the goblins to let them keep the SEO keywords.
Stephen took on the third lever: the ceremonial burning of a printed copy of “How I Made $5,000 on Medium in 5 Days.” Stephen torched the clickbait with business fury while I kept the flames off the venue’s router.
For the fourth lever, Majibai executed a ritualistic curse placed on anyone who uses the word “Delve.” Majibai led the anti-AI chant, while I threw every formatting style into a cauldron to ensure the hex mutated across the entire internet.
The fifth lever required a blood-ink signature transferring ownership of a firstborn’s SEO rights. Meta signed the contract to throw the kid’s Google visibility into her graveyard of ideas. I was ready to act as the crooked digital notary sealing the deal.
Finally, John pulled the sixth lever: the ultimate curation combo — premium coffee beans to appease the curation team, delivered with a desperate TL;DR disguised as a limerick.
There once was a writer named John, Whose views and whose pennies were gone. He offered them beans, To boost his routines, Please curate this draft before dawn!
With all six levers pulled, the writers waited for the cash storm. The screen blinked: Earnings: $0.06.
“The frequency isn’t distorted enough!” I yelled. “We need more power. Summon six more!”
The mainframe shuddered.
Dave stepped forward and whispered the infinite scroll incantation. Every line break multiplied, trapping the readers in an endless staircase of cliffhangers.
“Where does the story end?” Maria asked.
“It doesn’t,” Dave replied.
Maria followed with the viral-payout blood pact, leading a furious protest over a viral hit that earned exactly one penny.
Next, ElisePax unleashed the draft purgatory lament, a content-recycling raid, ripping hooks out of forgotten drafts and smashing them into one piece of instant clickbait.
Sourojit drew a circle around the router and began the echo-chamber séance.
The ghosts of departed readers appeared, clicked the title, and vanished three seconds later.
“Zero read time,” the dashboard confirmed.
Sudarsan performed the reciprocal clapping rite, clapping 50 times on a blank draft in hopes the algorithm would mistake the echo for human love.
For a moment, the room went silent.
Finally, Zeest performed the notification death rattle, shaking the monitor through six violent refreshes before reading the verdict aloud: “Total earnings: $0.12.”
At the main editorial desk, Poet In The Arctic urged me to finalize the draft and rituals before the publication deadline.
But I was still staring at the flickering grid in disbelief. Twelve rituals weren’t enough to force the system to break. I raised my pen, looked at the remaining empty slots on the floor, and issued a final warning to the algorithm.
“If this payout grid does not update in the next sixty seconds, six more will be added to the ritual!”
Roz deserves the credit for this occult cycle.
Poet In The Arctic conjured today’s prompt — and unleashed this entire ritual.
