Every Day Is a Test: Why Are We Here in This World?

Have you ever felt like every day you live is just a repeat of the same routine? Waking up, going to work, eating, interacting, sleeping — and then the same thing again tomorrow. From an outward perspective, life seems like a monotonous cycle. But what if there’s a greater secret behind all this repetition?

In the classic film Groundhog Day, the main character gets trapped in the same day, repeating it over and over. Interestingly, only after he becomes a better person — learning gratitude, helping others, correcting his mistakes — does he ‘graduate’ from that day and move on to the next.

That is also the reality of our life.

Life Is a School (Madrasa)

Allah SWT says in the Qur’an:

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Surah Az-Zariyat, 51:56)

Allah also says:

“If you are grateful, We will surely increase [goodness] for you.” (Surah Ibrahim, 14:7)

This verse isn’t just about wealth or sustenance. It’s about our spiritual rank (maqam) as human beings. Every time we are grateful and do our best in any situation, Allah elevates us to a higher level.

From an ordinary human being, we can rise to the station of the angels — living with discipline, honesty, and worship. From the station of the angels, we can rise to that of the prophets — guiding and benefiting others. Then onward to the rank of messengers, imams, until we reach the station of the Mahdi and ultimately become a true servant of Allah.

The end of this journey, as the Prophet Muhammad SAWW said:

“Whoever knows himself has known his Lord.”

Our goal is not just to be a good person, but to reflect divine perfection. Until, in reality, we become like Muhammad SAWW — a being who has attained the highest level of servitude, through whom Allah manifests Himself.

From Servant to Caliph, From Caliph to God in Creation

This is the hidden purpose of why we all come into this world:

To worship Allah, yes. But worship is not limited to bowing and prostrating. True worship is perfecting ourselves, being grateful in every situation, and passing through test after test with patience, acceptance, and effort.

Every day that feels the same is actually a level or stage in this game of life. If we fail to be grateful or do good, we become ‘stuck’ in that same day, the same station, unable to move forward. But once we pass, Allah opens the next door.

Conclusion

Our purpose is not just to live, eat, and die. We have a mission to:

• Perfect ourselves.
• Become the human being closest to Allah.
• Become a reflection of Allah’s attributes on earth.

As Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan a.s. said, “The true servant is the one who has become annihilated in Allah and manifests with Him.”
