Some People Call It Feedback When They Are Just Breaking Things

Destroying Confidence Takes Less Than a Minute

Destruction is quick; building people, trust, and work takes discipline and efforts.

The woman who broke my confidence did it with a smile.

That is how skilled wreckers work. They do not always shout. They do not throw plates or slam doors. They say one polished sentence in front of the right people and leave you to spend months repairing what they cracked.

I was young, presenting a small project I had worked on after cooking, commuting, and grading other people’s papers. My slide was not perfect. The font was too small, and I knew it. Before I could explain the main result, she leaned back and said, “Maybe this kind of work needs a more serious temperament.”

The room gave a little laugh.

I continued speaking because women learn to bleed internally while maintaining sequence.

Later, in the bathroom, I stared at myself and wondered if she was right.

That is demolition.

It is quick. It looks like honesty. It often gets mistaken for standards.

Building is slower and less entertaining. Building is the teacher who says, “Your argument is weak here, but the question matters.” Building is the friend who tells you not to send the angry message and then sits with you while you rewrite it. Building is the mother who shows a kid how to ask for the correct change instead of snatching the money back and calling her useless.

Women are trained to build almost everything quietly.

We build family memory. We build children’s confidence from homework tears. We build peace between relatives who should be old enough to manage themselves. We build reputations for men who cannot find their own documents but still call themselves providers.

Then someone walks in, points at the dust, and calls themselves honest.

I am tired of confusing criticism with usefulness.

Not every sharp comment is truth. Sometimes it is a small person enjoying a tall sound. Sometimes it is envy wearing professional language. Sometimes it is one wounded woman passing down the knife because no one ever taught her how to set it down.

I have been a wrecker too. That is the sentence that keeps me honest. I have corrected too harshly when I was tired. I have made a young woman feel smaller because her mistake landed on my worst day. I have called it discipline when it was irritation with a pen.

The mirror is rude, but necessary.

Now I ask myself before I speak: will this leave the person with a tool or only a bruise?

The answer is not always flattering.

The world has enough people who can identify cracks. Every family has one. Every office has several. Every comment section is full of them.

What is rarer is the person who helps hold the wall while someone learns to repair it.

I am still learning whether I am that person.

Some days I am only less careless than before.
