CRAIG’S COMMENTS: Speaking of Randy Vásquez and Freddy Fermin to the injured list and the return of Luis Campusano and Alek Jacob; plus thoughts on Jason Adam

Prior to Friday night’s game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, the Padres made a pair of moves:

— Right-handed starting pitcher Randy Vásquez was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right ankle contusion and right-handed reliever Alek Jacob was recalled from Triple-A El Paso.

— And catcher Freddy Fermin was placed on the 10-day injured list with a head contusion and catcher Luis Campusano (broken big toe) was activated from the 10-day injured list.

Padres’ manager Craig Stammen talked to those moves at the start of his pregame media session:

“Randy is doing much better today,” Stammen began. “We’re going to be very cautious with him with what he went through yesterday out on the field and then also off the field. We’re going to give him a little breather.

“All things point positive for Randy today, but we just have to be careful. His fainting spell was nothing more than I said last night. He was going to get an X-ray on his ankle and got a little woozy and fainted. We took him to the hospital and he was there until 3 a.m., so he didn’t get a ton of sleep last night.

“He’s definitely feeling the effects of everything that went on yesterday. The ankle contusion was one of those things where he got the adrenaline kick on the mound. You’re in Dodger Stadium and playing in a big game. Nothing was broken, which is good. He thought he could fight through it. But there was a lot of pain and obviously pain that led to other consequences.

“Randy’s ankle is not broken, so that’s the very positive news about it. But it’s definitely really sore and he’s limping around a little bit with it. It shouldn’t be an extended injured list stint. But you also never know and can’t predict that kind of thing.”

Stammen then discussed Fermin:

“Freddy is going on the regular injured list and not the concussion injured list,” said Stammen. “We’ve known the hits that Freddy has taken to the head throughout the course of the season. While he did not get diagnosed with a concussion, we thought it was smart to take care of him and give him a little bit more time to heal up from that previous concussion without getting another head blow.

“It’s a little scary the way he’s been beaten up behind the plate. And the risk after one concussion is the potential of what other hits to the head can lead to another concussion or a more serious concussion. We’re just trying to keep his best interests in mind and take care of him as best we can.”

Stammen on the return of Campusano, who had just started his rehab assignment with El Paso after being out since May 6:

“Campusano is back, maybe a little early,” said Stammen. “We would have liked him to play a few more games with El Paso and more than one full game. But circumstances changed that. He’s healthy and he’s been catching a lot and swinging here the last few games. We’re excited to have him back.”

Stammen on the number of injuries the Padres have recently suffered:

“It’s tough on everybody,” Stammen began. “It’s tough on the team, it’s tough on the individuals that it happens to. We also know we have a collective unit that can band together. We’re making that foxhole tight. We’re using this as a viewpoint: ‘This is testing us.’ What comes from being tested: preservation, preservation and resilience. And those are good qualities.

“If we use this to our advantage and those qualities come out from this, we’ll be in good shape going forward.”

A day earlier, the Padres lost right-handed reliever Jason Adam to the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain and reinstated right-handed pitcher Germán Márquez from the 15-day injured list. Stammen spoke to Adam’s condition:

“Any time you lose a pitcher to a shoulder or elbow situation, you hope it’s not season-ending,” said Stammen. “And for that we got good news on Jason in that this is not season ending. He’ll just need some time off, rest and hopefully be back at some point later in the season.

“I share Jason’s optimism that he’ll be back in August. Jason said he’d be back on Opening Day after his knee injury and was probably close to being ready and was ready in mid-April. He’s a strong man with strong faith and I believe he’ll be back in no time.

“We’ll take our time with him this time, too. You can’t rush those types of injuries with a pitcher. He has a career that he wants to have. It’s not always about just this season. We want to take care of him the best we can. If it was my son doing that, too, I wouldn’t want to rush him back just to finish the season. He has a long career ahead of him.”
