What do you remember from that year?

Once again, my memories of 1965 don’t reflect a great knowledge of current events. What I remember was Batman was on TV. But the format irritated me. It was shown in two-part episodes. The first part was shown on Wednesday night and the second part on Thursday night. I was generally gone on Thursday nights. Thankfully, I’ve had an opportunity to catch up over the years.

In the big picture, the struggle for civil rights continued, as did the space race. However, for the most part, this list will concentrate more on cultural things. and here we go,

1: The first cuss word was heard on American prime-time network TV in 1965. Miss Pringle used the D word on “My Favorite Martian.

I’m not letting that martin lower my standards.

2: Astronaut John Young smuggled an illegal corned beef sandwich onboard the Gemini 3 spacecraft. The sandwich is the only sandwich to make it into space.

That story is kind of rye.

3: Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov was the first man to “walk” in space.

While Leonov was the first to Space Walk, American Michael Jackson perfected the Moonwalk.

4: The Beatles played the first single band mega-concert in Shea Stadium 1965. The only sound system was the stadium sound system. The Beatles took the stage at 9:02 PM and left the stage at 9:36.

It sounds like some trips to taco Bell I’ve had.

5: Former Beatles’ drummer Pete Best released an album called “Best of the Beatles” even though there was no Beatles music on it. There was an investigation to determine if fraud was involved. It was determined that there was none.

Some names give you a natural advantage in life. I don’t think “Lambert of the Beatles would have sold many albums.

6: The US started airlifting Cubans who wanted to live in the US.

It was a different time. I assume they were airlifted to the US.

7: The average household income in 1965 was $6,450.

Much like today.

8: “Popping Fresh,” the Pillsbury Doughboy was born.

He went on to be a roll model.

9: The first Subway sandwich shop opened in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

That means Subway is 60 tears old. To commemorate that fact, Subway is bringing back meat from 1965. And I’m being told that’s not true.

10: Joe Namath signed with the New York Jets. Joe was drafted by the AFL Jets and NFL St. Louis Cardinals.

I think it’s best that Joe signed with the Jets. I don’t know how a guy wearing a mink coat and panty hose would have played in St. Louis in the 60s.

11: The St. Louis Arch was completed on October 28, 1965.

I assume that money given for the project was “Arch Support.”

12: Former prime minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill on January 24, 1965. Among Churchill’s quotes was, “A joke is a very serious thing.”

Which explains why it’s so hard to write politic satire in today’s world.
