My Favorite Flower Scent
A Simple Gardening story challenge

I admit, I started to go with the obvious yet again and say the Rose was my favorite flower scent. Even ole Will admits that roses smell amazing…
“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” William Shakespeare
But it’s hard to imagine if a rose had been called a cucumber or an asparagus that we’d think of it as fondly. Hopefully, if a rose had acquired one of those names my mother wouldn’t have seen fit to name me after it.
Cucumber Gilbert Anderson just doesn’t have the same ring.
But back to the topic at hand.
As I was walking my dog a few days ago, we walked by the above pictured fence. The smell was amazing. I immediately decided that these small flowers were my favorite flower scent.
After a little research I determined they were Jasmine. Many had already died thanks to the oncoming Florida summer heat but enough remained to make the air fragrant. I wish I had wandered by a week or two earlier.
The joy of being greeted by the scent of flowers is one of many reasons that taking walks helps me fight depression. The fresh air, the beautiful sights, the smiling faces of other walkers, and the smell of flowers can take a boring day and turn it into something unique and special. I’m grateful to the homeowners who take the time and effort to share such loveliness.
Plus, it makes my dog happy.
Happy dog, happy life. Okay, maybe it doesn’t rhyme but it’s still true.
I hope you find some lovely flowers to gaze at and smell today.
