A (Surprisingly) Common Misconception

There is a question that has appeared frequently, and one I’ve encountered repeatedly over the years …

“Did Dinosaurs even exist in India?”

The short answer is … yes! But the real story is far more interesting, and often also misunderstood.

Unlike North America, Mongolia, China, or Patagonia, the Indian Subcontinent is rarely associated with dinosaur discoveries.

Here, there are a few large museum displays, limited mainstream coverage, and almost no cinematic representation.

Thus, a common misconception emerges:

That India somehow ‘missed’ the Age of Dinosaurs.

However, the evidence tells a very different story …

And, by the way, Dinosaurs never really left India! They’re still here, but just in a different form.

India Was Never Alone: The Gondwana Story

During the Mesozoic Era (252–66 million years ago), India was not where it is today.

It was part of the southern supercontinent called Gondwana, alongside Africa, South America, Madagascar, Antarctica, and Australia.

This means that dinosaur faunas were not isolated within India, but were part of a vast, interconnected Gondwanan ecosystem.

This also implies India hosted ecosystems similar to those in Africa, South America, and Madagascar.

As a result, many Indian dinosaurs show closer evolutionary links to regions like Madagascar, rather than to modern Asia.

By ~80 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous, India had become an isolated island, drifting northward away from the remaining Gondwanan landmasses. Even today, features like the Palakkad Gap — a major geological break in southern India — hint at the deep structural foundations shaped by the Subcontinent’s ancient tectonic past. India Across the Triassic Period (252-201 million years ago)

The global super-continent Pangaea began breaking into more clearly defined landmasses: the northern Laurasia and the southern Gondwana.

Climate across much of the world remained hot and dry, though it gradually shifted toward more seasonal, tropical conditions following the end-Permian mass extinction — the “Great Dying.”

These changing environments favored the rise of the Sauropsids (reptiles), particularly the Archosaurs — the group that would eventually give rise to crocodilians, pterosaurs & dinosaurs.

Meanwhile, the once-dominant Synapsids (early relatives of mammals) survived, but were increasingly restricted to smaller ecological niches.

By the Early Triassic, basal Pseudosuchians (crocodile-line archosaurs) as well as early Pterosaurs, had already appeared.

Dinosaurs themselves would emerge later in the period, and most likely in the south-western regions of Gondwana.

Their earliest known fossils come from areas that are today part of South America, and possibly Africa.

At the time, the Indian Subcontinent was still physically connected to Africa.

It is therefore entirely plausible that early dinosauriforms dispersed into what is now India.

And indeed, *Alwalkeriaa possible early dinosauromorph (or very basal dinosaur) — *has been discovered in south-east India!

India Across the Jurassic Period (201-145 million years ago)

The super-continents Laurasia & Gondwana got more clearly defined during this time, but began to gradually fragment in the later stages.

Climatically, the world got wetter as the period went along. Initially, there was a minor volcanism-driven extinction event, too.

Dinosaurs rapidly diversified into a wide range of ecological niches worldwide and had now dispersed into Laurasia as well.

Meanwhile, their flying cousins — the Pterosaurs — remained the ‘Kings of the Skies’.

However, other relatives — the Crocodilians — declined in diversity, surviving within more restricted ecological niches.

From the Indian Subcontinent, early small-to-mid-sized sauropods have been found in south-east India, from this period’s early phases.

By the early-to-mid Jurassic, larger sauropods had appeared in central India, ranging between 10–15 metres in length.

In a development that would have a great impact much later, the first Birds evolved from small theropods during this period.

Finally, the earliest Mammals also emerged during this time frame, from a small but resilient synapsid lineage!

India Across the Cretaceous Period (145-66 million years ago)

Geologically, Gondwana continued to fragment, and by the mid-stages of this period, the Indian Subcontinent had become an isolated island.

Climate-wise, the world remained largely warm and humid. Numerous inland seas & river systems formed as the supercontinents broke apart.

Flowering plants (angiosperms) evolved during the Early Cretaceous and became dominant by its end.

Dinosaurs continued to diversify throughout this vast timespan and remained highly successful globally.

In India, most dinosaur fossils date to the later phases of this period, with significant finds of large sauropods as well as big theropods.

There have also been rarer remains of smaller theropods, ornithopods, and possibly late-surviving stegosaurs as well.

Toward the very end of the Cretaceous, the massive Deccan Traps volcanism began here — one of the largest such events in Earth’s history.

This event, occurring around the time of the K–Pg asteroid impact, is still thought to have contributed to the mass extinction that followed.

Which Species Lived Here? India’s Dinosaurs

The Indian Subcontinent has a highly diverse geological record, with a significant portion of Mesozoic rock formations preserved across the region.

The largest herbivores found here date from both the Jurassic and the Cretaceous periods:

  • *Barapasaurus tagorei, *one of the earliest large sauropods known, dating to the Early Jurassic
  • *Kotasaurus*, a closely related form represented by multiple specimens
  • *Isisaurus*, a Late Cretaceous titanosaurid sauropod
  • *Jainosaurus, *a contemporary to the above but thought to have broader Gondwanan affinities, particularly with South American taxa

In contrast, the best evidence of large carnivores comes exclusively from the Late Cretaceous, with notable discoveries including:

  • *Rajasaurus narmadensis*, a rhino-sized theropod discovered in the Narmada Valley, and formally described in 2003
  • It was a member of the Abelisauridae, showing closer evolutionary links to Madagascan forms than to African or South American ones
  • Other abelisaurids, such as Rahiolisaurus and Indosuchus, though their remains are relatively fragmentary

Along with smaller genera of sauropods, theropods, and possibly even stegosaurs, this suggests that the Indian Subcontinent supported:

  • A fully functional ecosystem, rather than a sparse or isolated presence
  • Representation across major dinosaur groups

What Have We Actually Found?

Contrary to popular belief, India has actually yielded substantial fossil evidence, and over a long period of study.

Modern scientific work in geology & palaeontology in the region dates back to the mid-19th century — close to the origins of these fields themselves.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) institute, which was founded during this time, continues to play a major role in fossil discovery and research.

While early work from the 1850s through the pre-independence period was significant, progress slowed in the decades that followed.

In recent decades, however, renewed interest and expanded fieldwork have led to important new discoveries.

These include not only skeletal remains, but also well-preserved fossilized eggs and nesting grounds — offering rare insights into dinosaur behavior.

India’s Famous Dinosaur Nesting Grounds

One of the most significant dinosaur nesting sites in the world is located at **Balasinor**, in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

Often referred to as India’s “Dinosaur Fossil Park,” the site contains:

  • Extensive egg clusters, with clear evidence of nesting behavior
  • One of the largest dinosaur hatcheries known globally

These discoveries provide rare insights into reproductive patterns, social behavior, and site fidelity, notably among Late Cretaceous dinosaurs.

India’s Major Dinosaur Fossil Regions

Other important locations within India for Mesozoic Era finds include the following key geological formations (a loosely descending order of influence):

A. Core Corridor (West-Central India, Cretaceous)

The most important dinosaur-bearing formation in India is the Lameta Formation, part of the Deccan volcanic province.

The most notable corridor here is the Narmada Valley within the state-belt of Madhya Pradesh to Gujarat.

Found preserved here have been both skeletal remains and eggs, thus forming the primary context for many major discoveries.

The Jabalpur region is especially significant, as some of India’s earliest dinosaur fossils were identified here during the colonial era.

B. Early Record (South-Central India, Triassic-Jurassic)

Among India’s oldest dinosaur-supporting formations is the **Kota Formation**, found within the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Dated to the Early Jurassic, it has produced some of the earliest giant sauropods known anywhere in the world.

The **Pranhita–Godavari Basin **also has yielded key deposits, including some of the earliest dinosauriform remains.

C. Supporting Sites (South-East & Western India, Jurassic-Cretaceous)

The Ariyalur–Trichinopoly Basin in Tamil Nadu dates to the Late Cretaceous and contains both marine and terrestrial deposits, along with fragmentary dinosaur remains.

Meanwhile, the Kutch Basin in Gujarat represents older Jurassic deposits and has been important for reconstructing broader ecosystem patterns.

Taken together, these formations reveal that India preserves a wide-ranging fossil record, albeit is uneven.

And these span from the earliest dinosaur origins, all the way to their final Cretaceous ecosystems!

So Why Don’t We See Them?

There are a number of complex reasons for this stereotype, with the major reasons being historically:

Geological Exposure

  • In regions like the western United States or in Mongolia, massive continuous arid landscapes greatly expose fossil-bearing rock layers.
  • India has such regions, but in a more fragmented way, and which are seasonally covered by soil & vegetation, thus exposing fossils less.

Preservation Bias

  • Fossilization is, in fact, a very rare process everywhere on Earth.
  • But India’s climatic conditions, erosion patterns & tectonic history, can reduce preservation or fossil accessibility.

Urbanization and land use

  • Large parts of the fossil-bearing regions of South Asia are inhabited, cultivated & developed, which in turn limits excavation.

Public Awareness Gap

  • Many discoveries remain within academic journals thus being absent from mainstream narratives, or are poorly represented in museums.

So the perception of ‘no fossils’ persists, when the reality is simply ‘less visible fossils’!

What Was India Like During the ‘Age of Dinosaurs’?

During the Mesozoic Era, the Indian Subcontinent underwent quite a dramatic geological transformation.

It shifted from a connected Gondwanan landmass to an isolated island drifting northward.

Furthermore, massive volcanic activity reshaped entire landscapes over here, with later, large-scale volcanism culminating in the Deccan Traps.

Hence, by the Late Cretaceous, India was no longer just another fragment of Gondwana. It had become a fully isolated island continent!

In evolutionary terms, this isolation turned India into something far more interesting …

Separated from the other landmasses, the existing dinosaur lineages continued to evolve in India under unique conditions.

These groups also showed closer affinities to Madagascar than to mainland Asia or Africa.

Similar evolutionary patterns are seen in other long-isolated landmasses, where unique ecosystems evolved in relative isolation (e.g., South America, Australia & New Zealand)

The Bigger Insight

The question should not be,

Why are there no dinosaurs in India?

Instead, it should (rightly) be:

Why don’t we hear about them?

And as we have seen, the answer lies not in absence, but in geology, visibility, as well as awareness.

Hence, to conclude, ‘The Great Dinosaur Story’ did not skip India.

It was always part of it, evolving, adapting, and even persisting.

Look closely, and you’ll still find their descendants — living dinosaurs — across India’s ecosystems today.

In fact, it never really ended … it simply took flight 🐣
