𝐔𝐦𝐦 𝐚𝐥-𝐐𝐮𝐫𝐚

If I were a dust particle in Mecca, I would be among the oldest things on earth. Not metaphorically — literally.

The traditions tell us that the earth itself began here, that dry land first surfaced at this precise point and then spread outward in every direction, the way a single word generates meaning before it generates sentences. Every city that has ever existed is, in some sense, downstream of this place. This is why the Quran calls it 𝐔𝐦𝐦 𝐚𝐥-𝐐𝐮𝐫𝐚, the Mother of Cities. Not because it is the largest, or the wealthiest, or the most strategically situated. But because it is the origin. And origin is a different kind of authority than power.

In Arabic, a mother | umm is not simply a point of biological beginning, she is the axis around which a family orients itself, the one to whom all roads return. The kaa’ba functions exactly this way: every city on earth faces it in prayer, five times a day, so that Mecca is perpetually at the centre of an invisible geometry made of human bodies turning toward it.

Recently, in my Arabic grammar test, I misplaced a fatḥa. One small stroke, sitting in the wrong position, and the conjugations that followed were all wrong. The circle had expanded, but from a displaced centre, so everything it touched was slightly off. This is what grammarians have always understood: precision at the point of origin is not pedantry. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬. Which is exactly why the centre must be right before the radius is drawn.

This is what the verse in Surah Ash-Shooara:7 is quietly pointing to when it frames the revelation as a message sent to Umm al-Qurā wa man ḥawlahā |.

أُمَّ ٱلْقُرَىٰ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهَا

the Mother of Cities and those around her. The message radiates outward from a centre, the way a circle expands from a single fixed point — A = πr² — every increment of radius multiplying the reach, until there is nowhere left uncovered.
