Fear Did In One Morning What Motivation Couldn’t Do In Weeks.

One and a half months left. I saw the number and felt absolutely nothing.

I remember being a little surprised at myself about that, actually. Shouldn’t a number like that do something to you?

It didn’t. I just closed the laptop and went on with my day like it was any other Tuesday.

By then, checking that countdown had become one of those small habits I didn’t even think about anymore. Open the file, glance at the corner, close it again. It had turned into background noise, the same way a clock on the wall stops meaning anything once you’ve looked at it a hundred times.

I kept going the way I’d already been going for weeks before that. Some good days. A lot of average ones. Studying when I felt like it, and mostly not when I didn’t.

Then It Said One Month.

Then one morning, I opened the file again, and the number had changed. One month left.

Nothing about that morning was different from any other. Same room. Same chair I’d been sitting in for weeks, without much really happening in it.

But this time it actually landed.

I felt scared. Properly scared, in a way, “one and a half months” never came close to. My stomach did that thing where it just drops for a second and doesn’t fully come back for a while.

I Sat There Longer Than I Meant To.

I didn’t do anything for a minute. Just sat there looking at that number, like it might change back if I looked at it long enough.

It didn’t, obviously.

And somewhere in that minute, something in me that had gone quiet for weeks just switched back on. I don’t really have a better way to explain it than that. Not a slow build. More like a switch.

I Started That Same Afternoon.

I sat down and got to work that same day. Not because I suddenly felt ready. I definitely didn’t.

I think I was just scared enough that sitting around doing nothing stopped feeling like an option anymore.

It didn’t stop at that one day either, which honestly surprised me a little. Over the next few weeks, I noticed I was procrastinating less, without really trying to force it. Things I’d written down to finish actually got finished, instead of quietly rolling into tomorrow the way they always used to.

Targets that had felt far away a month before started feeling doable. Not easy exactly. Just doable, in a way they hadn’t been.

Motivation Never Once Showed Up for Me.

Here’s the part I think about a lot now.

I spent that whole month and a half before it, waiting for motivation to arrive on its own. Telling myself tomorrow I’d feel more like it. That it would just click into place eventually, the way it seems to for other people.

It never came. Not once, in all that waiting.

Fear did the entire job in a single morning.

I think that’s the part nobody really tells you. It’s not motivation that actually gets most people moving. It’s finally seeing something real enough to be a little afraid of.

Knowing And Seeing Aren’t the Same Thing.

I knew the exam was getting closer the whole time. I wasn’t unaware of it, not really.

But knowing something sitting quietly in the back of your mind, and actually seeing it in front of your eyes, turned out to be two completely different things for me.

That’s exactly why the exam countdown ended up in the planner the way it did. Not to stress anyone out on purpose. Just so the date doesn’t get to sit comfortably far away in your head the way mine did, for a month and a half, before it finally caught up with me.

This is the same countdown that finally got through to me when nothing else was working.

You’re not missing motivation.

You’re just not seeing it clearly yet. 🤍
