the hesitation before love.

I feel like the love in your teenage is completely different than that of any other time in life.

It is not loud. It is not certain either. And most of the time, the love is not even properly confessed.

Teenage love lives in those glances that last just a second longer. In those conversations where you replay later, wondering if they meant something more than what they just said. In the way your heart reacts faster than your brain has time to even process what just happened.

But there is another feeling alongside this. FEAR.

Not really the dramatic kind. Not really the kind that makes you run away immediately. Quieter. Persistent type of fear- the type of fear that sits next to you and whispers ‘be careful’.

Because as much as you want to feel something real, you are also terrified of what it might cost you.

Falling in love the first time feels like stepping into something you do not really understand yet.

There is no clear outcome, no guarantee either. No way to control how deeply you feel or even how it will end.

And for someone who is like me- used to thinking ahead, protecting themself, or not getting too attached, that uncertainty seems dangerous.

You start asking questions even before anything has even begun.

What if I get too attached? What if they do not feel the same way? What if I lose myself in this?

So instead of just falling in love, you hover. Close enough to feel something. Distant enough to feel safe.

There is also another fear I have in teenage relationships.

Fear of giving too much.

Of saying too much. Giving too much. Of being the one who feels more.

You do not want to be the person who always texts first. The person who gets excited easily. The one who holds builds something meaningful in their head but the other person is just casually passing through.

So you hold back.

You type messages and delete them. You soften your messages because you do not want to be eager. You pretend not to care as much as you actually care.

Because somewhere along the way you learnt that “being too much” is risky.

That if you show all your feelings, you might lose the person instead of keeping them.

So you exist strangely in between.

You feel deeply but express carefully. You want closeness but maintain distance. You hope for something real but prepare for it to disappear.

And that space is exhausting.

Because love is meant to be felt but you are filtering it.

You are not fully in love. You are not fully free from it either.

You carry the weight of emotions you haven’t fully allowed yourself to express.

But beneath all that hesitation, there is always something honest.

You just want to be seen.

Not casually liked. Not admired from a distance- but truly known. You want someone to notice the small things about you. The way you think. The way you speak. The things you can never say out loud.

You want someone to choose you, not because it is easy but because it feels right to them.

That desire is never wrong. It is just human.

Maybe love at this age is not about diving without fear. Maybe its about learning how to feel without abandoning yourself.

It is about understanding care does not make you “weak”. That expressing yourself wont make you feel “too much”. That the right person will never be overwhelmed by your honesty.

And if someone leaves because you cared genuinely, then the problem was never that you felt too deeply. It was just that they did not meet you there.

Being a teenager in love is not just about romance.

It is about learning the emotional balance.

It is knowing that emotional vulnerability is not something to be ashamed of, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.

And maybe the real courage is not in avoiding love.

Maybe it is in allowing yourself to feel it — slowly, carefully, but honestly — without turning yourself into someone smaller just to keep it.

Because the goal is not to love without fear. It is about not letting fear decide how much you allow yourself to show.

Love, when we are young, is rarely perfect.

It is uncertain, messy, sometimes one sided, sometimes overwhelming.

But it is also one of the times you begin to understand yourself clearly.

Not just who you like.

But how you feel. How you protect yourself. How you want to be loved.
