Somaliland President Survives Assassination Attempt

A regional intelligence source told Eagle Intelligence Reports that Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro” survived an assassination attempt in the capital, Hargeisa, on June 23. The attempt came just days after Irro returned from an official visit to Israel that has sparked widespread controversy in Somali, Arab, and Islamic circles.

According to the source, the attempt took place after the president attended a series of meetings with Israeli officials and oversaw the opening of a Somaliland embassy in the city of Jerusalem. The visit and embassy opening marked one of the most significant foreign policy moves undertaken by Somaliland since it declared independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Somali state.

The internationally unrecognized region has long sought international recognition, viewing diplomatic relationships with influential regional and global actors as a possible pathway toward broader acceptance. The diplomatic opening toward Israel is an unprecedented shift in its political trajectory.

The Jerusalem embassy opening drew swift condemnation from the foreign ministers of 16 Arab and Islamic states. In a joint statement, they affirmed full support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
