Hidden in Plain Sight

The Dutch live music scene is overflowing with cover bands, while the airwaves are dominated by Dutch party pop sung by fresh-faced young artists celebrating little more than the joys of life at the local pub.

In many ways, Maureens are the antithesis of what currently dominates Dutch popular music. There is no attempt to follow prevailing trends, no pub anthems, and no calculated appeal to radio formats. Instead, the band embraces classic songcraft, chiming guitars, and melodies rooted in the golden age of guitar pop. At a time when it has become increasingly difficult for Dutch bands writing original songs in English to break through, Maureens continue to follow their own path. It may not lead to mainstream success in today’s Netherlands, but it results in something far more enduring.

Don’t Give Up, their new album, contains thirteen tracks, one meticulously crafted gem after another. Built on memorable melodies and timeless songcraft, these songs feel handmade, thoughtful, intelligent, and deeply human. There are no grand statements here, just sincere and personal stories told with warmth and precision.

These are melodies designed to linger, songs you find yourself humming long after they end. Such craftsmanship has earned Maureens a home on Spain’s Meritorio Records, hardly a surprise given the country’s long-standing love affair with power pop. Few places in Europe have championed the genre as consistently or as passionately as Spain.

For Dutch music fans, there is something bittersweet about this reality. The Netherlands has produced an abundance of brilliant guitar-pop bands, from Johan and Daryll-Ann to Moss and now Maureens, yet much of this music remains hidden in plain sight. If you don’t actively go looking for it, you may never find it.

Thankfully, I found Maureens. My only hope is that more listeners will do the same, not only in the Netherlands, but wherever people still appreciate timeless melodies, heartfelt songwriting, and the enduring charm of great guitar pop.
