A Breath of Black Forest Air: Our First Family Getaway
A Breath of Black Forest Air: Our First Family Getaway
After six months of the beautiful, blurry whirlwind that is new motherhood, my husband and I realized we desperately needed a reset. We had spent half a year pouring everything into our little one, and the “mundane” cycle of daily life was calling for a break. We were indecisive, traveling with an infant is a feat, but the craving for quality time won out. We packed the car and traded the city streets of Frankfurt for the emerald canopy of the Black Forest.
Into the Emerald Wild
The 250km drive through Freiburg to Titisee took about two and a half hours. Despite the long-weekend traffic, the moment we crossed into the Black Forest region, the tension left my shoulders. I was instantly captivated by the towering pines and the crisp, mountain air.
There is something deeply moving about how Europe preserves its natural heritage. Seeing a squirrel dart across the road, hearing the rhythmic chirping of birds, and watching canals cut through vibrant green fields felt like stepping into a storybook. It’s hard to put into words how “pristine” it felt. Nature is a masterclass in authenticity; it reminded me that life is a series of beautiful transitions, much like the changing seasons.
Serenity at Titisee
Our first stop was Titisee, a place where a glass-like lake sits cradled by the hills. It’s a hub for families, with plenty of boats available to rent if you want to find some peace on the water. Our daughter seemed just as enchanted as we were; she spent the entire time wide-eyed, taking in the sights and sounds of the Great Outdoors.
For lunch, we followed our cravings for Vietnamese cuisine to Isst Balance Titisee. It’s a charming, family-owned gem that offers incredibly fresh, healthy, and nutritious options (including great vegetarian dishes). The staff’s kindness made us feel right at home.
No trip to this region is complete without Black Forest Cake. We found a “hidden gem” at Seehotel Wiesler. While they held a Michelin star back in 2018, it’s their home-brewed coffee that is the real draw now. Sitting there with a rich cup of coffee and a view of the lake, I felt a rare sense of total contentment.
Pro Tip: If you want a quiet moment away from the crowds, park at Parkplatz See. For €2.50 an hour, you get access to a lovely, secluded garden right on the water.
Waterfalls and Cuckoo Clocks in Triberg
As the baby grew a bit cranky, we hit the road again toward Triberg. We stayed at Hotel Pfaff, which is perfectly situated right in the heart of the forest. Our balcony overlooked the famous Triberg Waterfall, with the museum and the world’s largest cuckoo clock shop just steps away. The hotel has a vintage, old-world feel – ideal for a quick overnight stay.
While Pfaff is famous for its version of Black Forest cake, I found it a bit heavy on the Kirsch (cherry brandy) – a dream for brandy lovers, perhaps, but a bit much for me!
The waterfall itself is spectacular. An €8 ticket grants you entry to both the falls and the museum.
- A Note on the Museum: We had a bit of a mix-up where the attendant seemingly forgot to hand us our physical museum tickets, so we missed out on that part. Be sure to double-check yours!
- The Trek: The hike up the waterfall is surprisingly stroller-friendly. We made it to the second bridge, which offers the most stunning, mist-covered backdrops for photos.
The Journey Home
We took a quick peek at the “Biggest Cuckoo Clock,” but honestly? It’s a bit of a tourist trap and can be skipped. The real magic isn’t in the roadside attractions; it’s in the winding roads, the lush landscapes, and the quiet majesty of the forest itself.
We headed back home feeling refreshed, reminded that while life changes once you have a baby, the world is still waiting to be explored ;one stroller-friendly path at a time.
