Planning a 2-Week Backpacking Trip to Tohoku, Japan in September
How my husband Chris and I crafted a dream itinerary filled with nature, history, and local sake—only to realize we had a minor scheduling miscalculation.

14 Days Trip Itinerary to Japan, Tohoku
My husband Chris and I are gearing up for an exciting adventure this coming September. We are heading to Tohoku, the rugged, breathtaking northern region of Japan’s main island.
For travelers looking to experience Japan off the beaten path, Tohoku is an absolute dream. It’s a region blessed with rustic hot springs (onsen), dramatic natural landscapes, rich samurai history, and, most importantly for us—incredible local Japanese sake.
With so many amazing breweries and regional flavors to explore, I spent hours researching and putting together a comprehensive 14-day Tohoku backpacking itinerary. I mapped out a beautiful loop route and proudly published the guide on our travel blog.

Savoring a bottle of Urakasumi (which we managed to source all the way in Canada!) while dreaming of our upcoming visit to its birthplace in Shiogama.
But almost immediately after hitting "Publish," a sudden realization hit me.
I looked at our calendar, double-checked our flights, and did the math.
"Wait... Chris, we don't have 14 days. We only have 13!"
Yes, we had a classic scheduling miscalculation. Our epic two-week itinerary was exactly one day too long.
The Art of the "Imperfect" Travel Plan
As any seasoned backpacker knows, the best-laid plans are bound to change. Whether it's sudden weather shifts, a missed train, or in our case, a basic counting error, flexibility is the ultimate travel skill.
Honestly? I think this is where the real joy of travel lies.
The process of debating which towns to keep, which sake breweries to prioritize, and where to shave off that extra day is half the fun. It forces us to slow down and really think about what matters most to us on this journey.

our travel plan for 14 days in Tohoku
For now, I’ve decided to leave our published blog guide as a 14-day itinerary. Why? Because it’s packed with so many incredible spots that it would be a shame to hide them. Plus, we want to leave the final decision to the road. Depending on the weather in September or the local recommendations we get along the way, we will decide which day to cut in real-time.
If you are planning a trip to Japan and want to escape the crowded golden route of Tokyo and Kyoto, Tohoku is calling your name.
