Health Is Wealth And We Forget It Every Day
A reflection on gratitude, perspective, and the extraordinary gift of an ordinary healthy life.

In my years of clinical practice, I have sat across from patients who would trade everything, every luxury, every comfort, every ambition , for what you and I have right now: a body that works. A morning that arrives without pain. A day that does not revolve around a machine, a drip, or a scan result.
Yet most of us wake up each morning, and the first thought is not gratitude. It is a comparison. We scroll through curated lives and feel smaller for it, no branded car in the driveway, no European holiday booked, no sprawling house to call home. We carry the weight of everything we do not have, while completely overlooking the most precious thing we do.
This article is not about telling you to stop dreaming. Dreams are what keep us moving. But it is a reminder, a gentle, urgent one, that the foundation on which every dream is built is health. And if that foundation is intact today, you are already richer than you realise.
“The person taking dialysis three times a week is not dreaming of a foreign holiday. They are dreaming of your Tuesday morning — ordinary, unscheduled, and free.”
PERSPECTIVE CHECK
What We Envy
A bigger house. A luxury car. An annual trip abroad. Social media highlights that make ordinary life feel inadequate. We measure our worth by what we accumulate.
What Others Long For
The ability to eat a meal without nausea. To sleep through the night. To walk to the market without exhaustion. The life of a chronically ill patient prays to reclaim , which is simply yours.
FROM THE CLINIC
What I Have Learned Watching People Fight for Their Health
I have held the hands of patients with end-stage renal disease, people who spend twelve hours a week connected to a dialysis machine just to survive. I have spoken with young cancer patients whose every plan, every dream, every ordinary wish has been suspended, hostage to the next biopsy result.
What strikes me most is not their suffering, though that is profound. It is their perspective. They do not fantasise about wealth or status. They fantasise about normalcy. About walking their child to school. About cooking a meal for their family. About waking up without wondering what the day’s pain will feel like.
Their deepest desire is the life you are living right now.
CLINICAL REFLECTION
One of my patients, a man in his early forties , told me something I have never forgotten.
“Doctor, before I got sick, I used to complain that my phone was two years old. Now I just want to be well enough to use it.”
Illness has a way of stripping life down to its essence. What remains is not prestige or possession, it is presence. The ability to simply be here, healthy enough to feel the sun, share a meal, or hold someone you love. That is the wealth no bank can store.
A BALANCED PERSPECTIVE
Dream. Aspire. Achieve. But Start From Gratitude.
I want to be clear: there is nothing wrong with wanting more. Ambition is not vanity; it is the engine of growth, of progress, of a life fully lived. Wanting a better home, a stable income, and enriching experiences for your family are healthy, human desires.
But there is a difference between dreaming from a place of gratitude and drowning in a sea of lack. When you are healthy, you can work toward your dreams. You can pivot when plans fail. You can try again tomorrow. Health is not the ceiling — it is the floor from which every aspiration rises.
When health is absent, the math changes entirely. The diagnosis becomes the only agenda. Every resource, financial, emotional, and physical , floods toward survival. Suddenly, that car, that holiday, that bigger house became completely irrelevant. What you would give for just one uncomplicated, healthy, ordinary day.
When you are healthy, life holds infinite possibilities. When health is lost, the only dream that matters is its return. Protect what you have. Be grateful. It is not small — it is everything.
DAILY GRATITUDE IN PRACTICE
Four Ways to Honour the Health You Have Today
- Begin With Thanks: Before checking your phone, take one breath and acknowledge that you woke up healthy. This small practice rewires how the day begins.
- Protect It Actively: Gratitude without action is incomplete. Move your body. Eat with intention. Sleep enough. Preventive care is thankfulness in action.
- 3. Limit Comparison: Social media is a highlight reel, not a full life. Curate what you consume. Comparison is the thief of present-moment peace.
- Give Back: If you are well, you have something to offer. Visit a sick neighbour. Donate blood. Healthy communities give to those who lack.
A FINAL WORD
Gratitude Is Not Complacency — It Is Wisdom
Being thankful for your health does not mean you stop striving. It means you strive from the right place, from abundance rather than scarcity, from presence rather than panic. It means you take care of this body that carries you through every moment of your life, instead of neglecting it in the pursuit of things that matter far less.
The next time you feel that familiar ache of wanting more, I encourage you to pause. Think of the dialysis patient counting down hours on the machine. Think of the young mother in a cancer ward, writing letters to her children just in case. Think of every person who would give up every material thing they own to stand where you stand today — healthy, capable, free.
Then breathe. And be grateful to your Creator for the extraordinary gift of an ordinary, healthy day.
