1. Use just one typeface

Choose just one typeface for your logo to keep everything consistent and clean. Make sure the typeface has a few different weights and styles as you’ll find you need these when using across your brand, for instance, a bold heading contrasting with light body copy or finer/thicker lines to match the stroke width of the logo as you resize. I generally use Adobe Fonts or Google Fonts — look at how many variations of the font there are — I tend to ignore fonts with only 1 or 2 variations and “heart” those with say 20 — such as Helvetica Neue, Futura or Mr Eaves.

2. Choose a font to match your logo style

Look at the details of the font and match it to your logo.

For instance, a logo with a rounded end to the stroke suits a “rounded” font — such as Museo Rounded (for Sociamara) or Le Havre rounded (for Other Books).

Or if your logo contains a circle — choose a font with a pure circle for the “o” such as Century Gothic or Futura (as used for the Social Collab logotype).

3. Look at the details of the letters

Look at specific letters —for example, I was after a soft, friendly feel for “other books” so I looked at characters such as the “t” and “l” to see if they had curved tails. Another good letter to look at is the lower case “g” to decide if a modern or swirly variation suits. I also look at things like if the full stop is a circle or a square (likewise the dot on the “i”).

4. Start with Google Fonts

It’s free to download from, lets you try your name written out in the font, let’s you filter font styles and shows you variations for each typeface. Also if you use a font from here, you’ll have a consistent font to use for applications such as google slides & docs and for your website.
