For a long time, I carried a quiet fear in my heart that maybe I was too much to love, too heavy to hold, too complicated to keep. I believed people would always drift away once they saw the messy parts of me. And truthfully, there were days when I almost convinced myself that love only existed in fleeting moments of care, followed by long silences, in words that sounded like promises but never truly stayed.
But life, in its gentle and surprising ways, proved me wrong.
Because then I found people; friends, who didn’t just walk into my life, but who stayed. People who cared not only when I was smiling, but especially when I wasn’t. People who noticed the quiet shifts in my tone, who could hear the difference between “I’m fine” and “I’m breaking inside.” People who reminded me that being loved isn’t something I have to earn, and being cared for isn’t something I have to apologize for.
And that kind of love… it changes everything.
It’s in the way they listen without judgment, as if every word I speak matters. It’s in the way they laugh with me on the good days and sit with me through the heavy ones. It’s in the way they never make me feel like a burden, even when I’m convinced I am. They don’t run away when the storms come, instead, they hold their ground, and they hold me too.
That’s when I realized that real care is not loud or dramatic. It doesn’t need grand gestures or perfect timing. Sometimes it’s as simple as a late-night text that says, “Did you eat?” or a voice that gently asks, “How are you, really?” Sometimes it’s a random video call just to check in, just to see my face and make sure I’m okay. And sometimes, it’s simply their presence… the kind that doesn’t demand me to be okay.
And the most beautiful part? They choose me. Again and again. Not because I am flawless or easy to love, but because they see something in me worth holding onto. And that realization alone feels like a kind of healing I never thought I would find.
So, yes, I still overthink. I still have moments when I feel like disappearing. But then I remember the people who love me, not just the best version of me, but all of me. And in those moments, I breathe a little easier. I smile a little deeper. Because I know I am not alone, and I know I am not unloved.
And maybe this is what true happiness looks like, not the absence of pain, but the presence of people who make the pain bearable. Not perfection, but connection. Not needing to pretend, but being loved exactly as I am.
And that, to me, is the greatest gift life has given me: friends who care in ways my heart will never forget.
