In 2022, global data centers used around 460 terawatt-hours of electricity which is nearly the energy used by an entire large country. And it’s not slowing down.
With the explosion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and streaming, these demands are rising fast. In North America alone, AI workloads nearly doubled electricity use at data centers in just one year.
Kind of mind-blowing, right?
However, the good news? Tech giants are taking this seriously. Some more than others.
Take NVIDIA, for example. They recently hit a major milestone of 100% renewable electricity for their offices and data centers. That’s impressive, and they’re not alone.
Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta have also made bold climate pledges. And many are investing in high-efficiency chips, AI systems that use less power, and smart grid partnerships.

Even with clean energy goals, the digital footprint is still growing.

NVIDIA and Schneider Electric are collaborating to reimagine data center power systems using more efficient 800V designs.
Some cities in Europe are experimenting with reusing data center heat to warm public buildings.
Others are shifting toward modular, localized servers instead of massive centralized ones.
And all this? It’s not just about being nice to the planet. It’s becoming a business necessity.
Investors are watching. Regulators are catching up. And tech companies that can prove their climate commitment are gaining an edge.
