The Forgotten Triangle of Southern Nigeria (and What I Was Never Taught in School)

Most narratives about Nigerian history separate civilizations that were actually deeply connected:

  • Benin Kingdom
  • Oyo Empire
  • Eri/Nri Civilization
  • Ijaw Kingdoms

But history was never isolated — it was a system of interaction shaped by trade, migration, conflict, and cultural exchange.

The Benin Kingdom evolved from the Ogiso–Oba transition. The Oyo Empire became a dominant political and military power in West Africa. The Eri–Nri system shaped deep cultural and ritual structures in the Igbo hinterland. The Ijaw kingdoms controlled coastal waterways linking inland societies to Atlantic trade.

By the 15th century, Portuguese contact introduced firearms, cassava, and Atlantic trade dynamics, reshaping regional power structures. Colonial and Atlantic systems later intensified these interactions.

History is not separate stories — it is one interconnected network.

Four kingdoms. One hidden system.

Why this matters (for me personally)

I spent time consuming films, documentaries, and Netflix storytelling, but still felt gaps in understanding the deeper connections between Eri, Benin, Oduduwa narratives, and broader Nigerian identity.

That gap pushed me to revisit what I was taught versus what actually exists in oral tradition, migration history, and historical interaction.

The goal is simple: move from fragmented narratives to a clearer, connected understanding of who we are.
