An Album A Day: 26/365

Snowpocalypse day 2. It’s realy not that bad. We got quite a bit of snow and the roads kinda suck, but I didn’t really have any issue getting to or from work, so I guess it really wasn’t that bad. I can’t say that it’s been the best day, but overall, it’s been alright. I do have some homework to get done tonight so I think we’re gonna jump right into the album deets for today.

As I was first compiling my list of albums, someone had suggested looking into top album lists, or something of the sort. When that was suggested, I decided to look into Rolling Stones Top albums of all time. That is where I found album number 73. I can’t say that I’m excited for this one as the band is one that I’m not really a big fan of, but as I’ve stated about bands like this before, I certainly hope today’s listen changes that opinion of the band. Album number 73 turned out to be, ‘Pet Sounds’ by The Beach Boys.

Standout Songs: Wouldn’t It Be Nice

Listening Notes: I started the album and immediately knew that I should be listening to this on vinyl. Oh well. I don’t think anyone doesn’t know ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ at this point. I can say that I don’t think I’ve ever intentionally listened to it until now, so thats something. It’s a solid tune, despite the fact that it makes me think of 50 First Dates. hah I say that like it’s a bad thing, but that was a pretty cute movie. I’d watch that shit again.

The second track is one I don’t think I’ve ever heard, and feels a little too choiresque for my tastes. When we get to ‘That’s Not Me,’ there is a bass line that pans from center over to right, and I wonder how much of that was present on the original recording… I really like it. It feels nice and adds that nice little back bone for the track.

There is something about this music that just feels calm and carefree. Almost like nothing in the world mattered at the time, which I don’t think was the case. However, I feel like this music was used as a bit of escape for those who might have been struggling with the state of the world at the time. At least those who were privileged enough to get an escape, and weren’t forced to suffer the cruelty that was the Vietnam War.

While I can appreciate this music for what it is, there is something a bit boring about it. I feel like I’ve heard the same song over and over again. After the first couple they all started to just blur together to me. I can’t deny that it’s GOOD music, but I think it’s true quality is lost on the likes of me. It’s unfortunate because I want to like it. It’s funny, ‘I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times’ just started and I think that’s accurate for me. I wasn’t made for 1966, at least in terms of popular music.
