If there’s one thing about Delhi’s wedding season, it’s that you never know what you’re walking into. Last week, I found myself driving two hours through chaotic traffic to attend my boss’s son’s wedding in Gurgaon. I had high hopes — a grand party, loud music, delicious food, and endless energy. But the moment I stepped in, reality hit hard.

The gathering was small, the music barely audible, and the vibe? Dull as a Monday morning. I turned to my colleague Ayush, with a sigh. “This is not my kind of wedding.” Ayush, my partner-in-crime, read my expression like a book. We both knew it was time to change the narrative. That’s when the idea hit us — why not gate-crash the wedding next door? It was reckless and a little crazy, but we were desperate for some fun.

We hopped into the car, laughing at how absurd we were being, and parked outside the next venue. It was the Umrao, Gurgaon, a place famous for its lavish celebrations. After straightening our outfits, we walked in confidently, as though we belonged to it.

“And what we saw was pure magic!” Loud music filled the air, the crowd was vibrant, and the food — oh, the food! Now, here’s the kicker: this was a proper Jaat wedding. You know, the kind where the energy is electric, people are loud and proud, and the desi vibes are unmistakable. But the food? It wasn’t just desi. They had sushi. Yes, sushi! Seeing sushi at a Jaat wedding almost blew my mind. Jaats are known for their hearty, rustic style — makke di roti, dal tadka, and rich curries — not delicate Japanese rolls.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the contrast, but let me tell you, those sushi rolls were irresistible. It was surreal to see a cuisine so far from the desi style being served at a wedding that otherwise screamed “desi swag.” Ayush and I sampled just about everything from sushi to desserts, all while soaking in the buzzing energy of the venue.

After indulging in the feast, we hit the dance floor. The crowd was wild and welcoming, and before we knew it, we were grooving like long-lost cousins. But Ayush and I weren’t done yet. “Let’s make this truly unforgettable,” he said. We marched up to the stage, posed for pictures, and even congratulated the groom. That’s when I decided to confess.

“I’m sorry, I sneaked into your wedding. But honestly, you’ve made my day!” The groom looked at me in shock before bursting into laughter. And just to make it a complete story, I handed him an empty shagun lifafa, said thank you, and bolted off the stage before anyone could question us further.

Feeling victorious, we decided to complete our night with a touch of irony. We returned to my boss’s son’s wedding, grabbed the Mithai gift box like the dutiful attendees we were supposed to be, and finally drove home, laughing till our stomachs hurt.

“Sometimes, the best nights are the ones you don’t plan.”

This little adventure of mine is proof that life’s most memorable moments come from breaking the routine—and, occasionally, sneaking into the right party.
