India’s biochar market shows a split:

Public market indications for India showed industrial biochar at $140-$160 per mtCO2e and artisanal biochar at $100-$120 per mtCO2e, implying a premium of roughly $20-$60 per mtCO2e. The gap was linked to methodology and production methods rather than geography alone, suggesting a more segmented market. This matters because biomass-based removals are not trading as one uniform product. Expect cotton-residue biochar projects with stronger monitoring, methodology, and delivery controls to target better pricing than lower-cost artisanal supply.

Microsoft pause unsettles removals market:

New carbon removal purchases were reported to be on pause, while the reason and duration remained unclear, and existing agreements appeared intact. Microsoft’s 2025 sustainability report also showed total Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions were 23.4% above its 2020 baseline, driven by growth factors including AI and cloud expansion. This matters because large buyers shape confidence for project finance, procurement, and scale-up across removals markets. Net-net, cotton-linked carbon removal developers may face a tougher offtake and fundraising environment if buyer caution deepens.

Mobile biochar gets a draft pathway:

A draft module for biochar production in mobile reactors entered public consultation until April 30, 2026 under the Isometric Standard. The framework includes mass-based composite sampling, a conservative methane discount, post-relocation inspection, instrumentation calibration, site-specific safeguards, and GPS-based digital MRV requirements. This matters because mobile systems can follow dispersed biomass instead of forcing residue into fixed-plant logistics. This suggests cotton-stalk projects using transportable reactors may get a clearer certification route if they can meet tighter monitoring rules.

🤝 In the World of CDR Offtake:

JPMorgan backs biomass-based removals:

A 10-year agreement covers 60,000 tonnes of durable carbon dioxide removal credits from Graphyte’s Project Loblolly in Arkansas and Project Ponderosa in Arizona. Project Loblolly issued 15,000 credits in 2025 and uses agricultural and timber residues, while Ponderosa remains under development and will use biomass from forest thinnings. This matters because buyers are still signing disclosed, multi-year biomass-based CDR deals tied to operating history and pipeline scale. That likely means cotton-residue developers will need stronger proof of execution and delivery credibility to win similar contracts.
