Disclosure Day: Can Aliens Replace God?

What a gift it is that Steven Spielberg is still making movies. Disclosure Day is his 35th directorial effort in a career spanning over five decades.

Spielberg hasn’t lost his spark; the film itself is excellent on both a technical level and in terms of story. It’s more grounded than most, exploring what might happen if aliens were revealed to exist in our own world, as opposed to something like E.T. or Jaws. It asks what the world would do with the “full disclosure” of such information, and what might happen to our notions of God. What happens to the supreme being when actual “supreme beings” make themselves known?

Throughout the 145-minute runtime, meteorologist Margaret Fairchild and other characters experience what can only be described as spiritual happenings and events. After a strange bird enters Margaret’s apartment, she is quite literally able to speak in tongues and receive special revelations, among other abilities which allow her to accomplish the task of disclosure. This is a blatant lifting from Scripture, the New Testament in particular. Alien life and technology are the Gospel of our modern era, and the whole world must know the truth and be changed.

But can aliens truly replace God? I mean, in the long term, if advanced aliens are proven to exist, will God become obsolete?

To put it plainly, no. Aliens, as interesting as they are, still exist within the material world. They are observable, and they will be figured out in time (assuming they exist at all). You just can’t say the same about God, who is outside of the universe and not knowable in the same way. The truth is that all of this has happened before with different discoveries and disclosures; it’s nothing new. If Christianity is objectively true then nothing we find will be able to destroy it.
