THE HINDU TEMPLE GUARDIANS — ‘BHOOTHAS’

Bhoothas & daivas are not worshipped on a
daily basis like some Hindu gods. Their worship
is restricted to annual ritual festivals, they are
situated well within the main temples.

It is believed that praying to the appropriate bhootha will help a person overcome their problems. They share features of deities, Puranic roots, rituals and sacred space.
Bhoota Kola is an annual folk ritual of Tulu-speaking people in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi in Karnataka and some Kerala districts where local spirits or deities are worshipped.
