From Overwhelmed to Certified: My AWS Developer Associate Journey

As December 1, 2024, rolled around I found myself on an ambitious mission: earning the AWS Certified Developer Associate (DVA) certification. It felt like the perfect way to cap off the year but little did I know how much of an adventure it would turn out to be.

Let’s start with a confession. I paid for the exam before even cracking open a book. Was it impulsive? Definitely. Did it make me question my life choices? Oh, absolutely. When I first skimmed the syllabus my brain short-circuited for a moment. “What have I gotten myself into?” I thought. I could have started with something simpler like the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification but where is the fun in playing it safe? Spoiler alert. Committing financially turned out to be a great motivator.

Building a Foundation

I turned to Stephane Maarek’s course on Udemy which came highly recommended. For the next month I dedicated 3 to 4 hours a day to studying, breaking it into one-hour chunks with plenty of snack breaks to keep my sanity intact. Christmas? Forget festive feasts. I was deep-diving into topics like VPCs, DynamoDB and Lambda. Sure it wasn’t the most traditional holiday but hey, it worked.

What really boosted my confidence was my hands-on experience. During my internship at Mark Developers I worked with AWS services while building CI/CD pipelines and managing infrastructure. My capstone project during my final semester also gave me exposure to tools like Jenkins, CloudWatch, EC2, VPC and IAM which felt like a head start. These experiences helped me connect the dots during my preparation and made the material feel less abstract.

To get a solid overview of AWS I also completed the Cloud Practitioner Essentials course on Amazon’s Skill Builder platform. It is free and gave me a big-picture understanding of the various AWS services and their use cases. It is like a sampler platter before diving into the main course.

Practice Exams

Practice exams were an essential part of my preparation. I used a mix of free and premium practice exam sets to test my knowledge. My honest review of Tutorial Dojo’s practice exams? They are incredibly challenging and demand a deep understanding of coding and logic. These exams are tough and will test your limits, often breaking your confidence. But that’s the beauty of it. Breaking is what makes you stronger. While you might not encounter questions this difficult on the actual exam, tackling these tests ensures you’re more than prepared for whatever comes your way.

Final Exam

The exam itself? Think of it as a series of “choose your own adventure” puzzles. Every question throws you into a real-world scenario where you’re the AWS developer. Your mission is to figure out the best solution to meet the objective buried in the question. It is not about memorizing services. It is about understanding how to use them effectively, a challenge that is equal parts nerve-wracking and satisfying.

Earning my Developer Associate certification was more than just a professional milestone. It was a confidence boost and a validation of my skills. If you’re considering taking the plunge, do it. Who knows? It might just be the best impulsive decision you’ve ever made.

3. Stick to a Schedule: Whether it is an hour a day or three, consistency is key. Small steps add up.
4. Don’t Panic: Feeling overwhelmed is normal. Use the divide-and-conquer approach, Break the syllabus into manageable chunks and tackle one at a time.
5. Focus on Concepts: The exam isn’t about memorization. It is about knowing when and how to use AWS services.
