Over the past few weeks, GitHub hasn’t just experienced a random outage or two. What’s unfolding is a pattern — one that exposes deeper strain inside the platform that developers rely on as critical infrastructure.

The Illusion of “Just Another Outage”
On April 27, users started noticing something subtle but disruptive: pull requests missing, search returning incomplete results, issue tracking behaving inconsistently. The root cause wasn’t a catastrophic crash — it was an internal failure in GitHub’s Elasticsearch system.
That distinction matters.
The platform was technically “up,” but functionally unreliable. This kind of degradation is more dangerous than downtime because it corrupts developer trust. When data appears incomplete or inconsistent, workflows break silently.
