For decades, biologists viewed the forest as a brutal marketplace where every plant fought for itself. But in the late 1990s, ecologist Suzanne Simard discovered something that flipped botany on its head. Trees aren’t just neighbors; they are deeply connected roommates.
Fungi grow massive underground webs of tiny, thread-like structures called hyphae. These threads weave into the root cells of trees.
The trees provide the fungi with sugar (made from photosynthesis).
In exchange, the vast fungal network absorbs water and nutrients from the soil and feeds them back to the trees.
But it goes much deeper than a simple trade agreement. This network connects different trees to one another.
The "Mother Trees"

At the center of these networks are the oldest, tallest trees—often called Mother Trees. They possess the deepest root systems and the most extensive connections.
When a Mother Tree detects that its own saplings are growing in the shade and lacking sunlight, it will actively route life-saving sugars to them through the underground network. If a Mother Tree is injured, it accelerates the transfer of its resources to the younger generation before it dies.
Why This Changes Everything

We often look at nature through the lens of pure competition—survival of the fittest. But the Wood Wide Web proves that cooperation is just as vital for survival.
