The Night I Was Saved… and Betrayed

My Name is Emma
My name is Emma, this is my story of how I got saved, love, and abandoned.
I am Twenty-three, born in a quiet, unremarkable (but never easy) little village. My home was as far away from a place as I could be. We might of not had much, but I learned to be tough. I worked in a small café. The pay was little but I had to support my family. Each coin I earned felt like a tiny morsel of love I could reciprocate to them.
An Unexpected Rescue
I had been working one evening and when I completed my shift I walked home solo. An emptied road, void of sound, eerily silent except for the sound of her own footsteps, which sounded too loud against the stillness After that, I heard something else — footsteps behind me. My heart began to race.
Further down the street, a number of men stood at the corner. The sound of their laughter scattered in the night air. When they saw me, the voices became louder, more piercing. I hurried my pace, as if I didn’t hear it.
However, one of them followed me back. My throat tightened. I wanted to cry.
And then all of a sudden, a deep voice behind shouted
“Leave her alone!”
I turned. A tall man was approaching us — his face placid, his body relaxed in a sturdy stance. The men faltered, then gradually shuffled away, into the gloom.
I was frozen for a second. My legs trembled beneath me. The stranger gazed at me with spirit and said,
“Are you okay?”
I nodded, unable to even give the word a tone of voice. He smiled softly.
“Don’t worry. You’re safe now.”
A Gentle Beginning
His name was Daniel. He was on vacation in our village for a couple of weeks, staying in the city. Over and over again I thanked him.
He said quietly,
“It’s nothing. Anyone would’ve done the same.”
But for me — it wasn’t nothing. He had saved me.
Later that night, swaddled in the sheets, unable to sleep, his voice, his eyes, how safe I felt around him kept coming back to me like a vivid flashback.
Daniel stopped by the café the next morning. He gave the smile and wave like we had been friends for years. He set a cup of tea for me and inquired about my day. And he was calm and his words were sincere.
I told him about my quotidian existence, working, family and studying one day. His gaze never left me, as he listened intently. I had never had anyone listen to me like that.
Something Gentle Growing
Daniel began visiting often. Or he came over just to see how I was doing. Sometimes he just stayed longer waiting for me to take a break. He’d ask,
Just a simple, “Can I sit with you for a minute?”
And I always said yes.
We exchanged small talk, the weather, the city, the flavor of tea. Yet in between those brief words there was something soothing and easing into bloom. Every time he smiled, chills began to take over my chest.
He asked me once about my dreams. I said softly,
“I want a better life. All I want to do is study, make a way out of this madhouse so I can study some more.
He nodded with a kind smile.
“That’s good, Emma. You deserve more.”
Nobody ever said that to me before. His words stayed in my heart.
Weeks passed and his visits were my favorite part of each day. My coworkers teased me, whispering,
“Emma, he likes you.”
All I did was smile and pretend that I wasn’t blushing.
A Promise and a Feeling
One night Daniel was walking me home again. We chatted and giggled down the dark road. I was also no longer afraid of the night, for the first time ever. When he asked,
“Do you always walk alone?”
I said,
“Yes, every day.”
He frowned and replied,
“You shouldn’t. From now on, you and I will walk together.
And he did. Almost every night. He carried my bag, he asked about my day, he made me feel visible. My mother saw this and smiled, saying:
And: “Daniel seems to be a nice dude.
I blushed and whispered,
“Yes… he is.”
I felt it growing on the inside but it was quiet and deep. He was, after all, not just the man who saved me; he was becoming the man I want.
One night, as we were taking a walk, he quietly said,
“Emma, It makes me smile to be around you.
My cheeks burned with warmth. I thought, Oh, well, maybe this is love for the first time ever
The Slow Fade
It all felt nice… until it all made sense.
Slowly, Daniel started to change. He would tell me he was busy and he came to the café rarely. Holding his gaze on the phone as we walked home. He spoke less, smiled less.
I asked once,
“Is something wrong?”
He forced a smile.
“No, don’t worry.”
You went over to the other side but I felt you there The fun we shared had diminished. On some nights he never even came, he said he had to go to the city for work. And I believed him — because he used to be the one who kept me safe.
The Truth Revealed
And then just one night, there he was in the café. He wasn’t alone. A girl sat across from him. Whispers, smiles, lean-ins. My heart sank. I quickly turned away and said to myself,
Maybe she’s just his friend.
The next day, I asked,
“Who was that girl?”
He replied too fast,
“Just a cousin.”
But those eyes of his shied away from mine, and his voice was cool. I wanted to trust him, so I kept quiet.
Days passed. His calls turned to less time and his texts devolved to silence. My friends warned me,
“Emma, he’s changing. Be careful.”
But I shook my head.
“No, Daniel is kind. He had saved me before… he wouldn’t hurt me.
Still, I just knew something inside was cracking. However, night after night, silence after silence — I waited for him. But now I was a dark shape pursuing a shining that would never shine for me again.
The End of a Dream
One night I had an idea of surprising him. After finishing work early, I headed into the city to check out his world. I ring him up, but he don’t pick up.
I was walking by a restaurant, looked through the window and there he was. With her. The same girl. They were laughing. He held her hand.
My heart froze. I had difficulty inhaling oxygen, I see. I couldn’t move. I wanted to bolt inside, to scream (ask) Why, at the door — but my legs simply went numb. Finally, I turned away. I was just wandering in the streets with tears all over my face.
That night, my phone rang. It was Daniel. He said softly,
“I’m busy with work.”
I whispered out thanks for listening, my voice shaking.
“Daniel… I saw you.”
There was silence. Then his voice cracked.
“Emma… I’m sorry. I didn’t plan this. I still care for you.”
Tears ran down my face. I said through sobs,
“You had saved me before… why did you shatter me now?
He had no answer. Only silence. Then finally, he said,
“Please forgive me.”
I ended the call. And on that night, I crumbled inside.
heartbreak 3 1 1 A Broken Heart, A Stronger Spirit
Days passed. The pain didn’t fade quickly. I was confused, hollow and betrayed.
But after a few weeks it started to dawn on me, not everyone who saves you is meant to stay. Not every promise is true. Not every smile conceals affection.
However, in spite of my broken heart, I discovered one small fact –
Broken, but still strong, I will be even more the rest of my life.
