SECTION 2; TRUE WORSHIP & WORSHIPPERS

• Through the Spirit

First, you need to understand that man is a spirit, has a soul, and lives in a body. Your worship, which is your adoration and veneration, is directed to God. The relationship we have with Him is that of Father to child, spirit to spirit.

So, when approaching Him, you need to do so with that understanding. We are not approaching Him with our human feelings, selfish desires, or natural minds, because these cannot comprehend how great, mighty, and supreme God is.

1 Corinthians 14:15 (NIV)

“So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.”

There are times when words alone will limit us, but thanks be to God for the Holy Spirit. Through Him, we can express our worship in diverse kinds of tongues, speaking the language of the Spirit.

This particular aspect is one that many people have struggled to understand. You need to ask yourself: Why do I have to worship? Why is worship so important?

First, settle this within yourself: when you are in the posture of worship, you are not doing it because you are excited or happy. You are doing it because of who He is. Let’s look at the Psalm of David.

Psalms 103:1–18 (NIV)

[1] Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name. [2] Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits— [3] who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, [4] who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, [5] who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. [6] The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed…

As believers, we are not meant to walk by emotions. Worship is not tied to whatever our human minds are feeling. Worship is so sacred that our natural minds alone cannot fully comprehend it.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (AMP)

“In every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.”

Give thanks in all situations the scripture says…

Do you know what the Scripture means when it says, “In everything give thanks…”?

How do you give thanks to God in every situation? How do you reverence Him despite the things you have asked for that you have not yet received? Do you thank Him only after you receive? You have to be real and truthful with yourself.

You have to get to that standpoint where you look past all that God has done for you (not necessarily forgetting it, but it should not become your basis) or what He has not yet done for you, and worship Him simply for who He is. Waiting until you feel like worshipping will shut the door to the greater picture that you are meant to walk in. Paul and Silas prayed and sang while they were in prison. They looked past their circumstances and still acknowledged God before their deliverance came.

God deserves our adoration. He deserves our thanksgiving and our gratitude. He deserves our honor. We worship Him because He first loved us. He looked past our shame, our mistakes, and our sin, yet He still calls us His own.

There is no other person or thing that deserves our worship other than God. Therefore, be careful not to place anything above Him, because that thing will eventually occupy God’s place in your life. Even the most subtle things can gradually become higher priorities or take God’s place of worship in our lives. That is why we must remain in constant fellowship with God so that we do not fall away from our right standing with Him.

The heart posture matters a lot.

But having the right posture is only part of what God desires. There is yet another dimension of worship that every believer must understand if true worship is to become a lifestyle rather than a moment. We’ll continue from here in the next section.
