The NAACP Is Making Its Biggest Midterm Investment Ever of $20 Million. Here’s Why It Matters.

As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, the NAACP is doing something that is UNPRECEDENTED. It's investing $20 million to shape what comes next.

The NAACP leadership has announced that the NAACP isn't celebrating America's 250th birthday by looking backward.

The nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization announced it will spend $20 million on a nationwide Get Out the Vote campaign ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, making it the largest midterm election investment in the organization's history.

But, this isn't just another voter registration drive.

The NAACP says it plans to recruit 20,000 volunteers and mobilize 6.5 million Black voters across 14 states and 33 congressional districts.

The organization says the investment comes after years of legal battles over voting rights, racial gerrymandering and election access.

For decades, Black voters have been among the Democratic Party's most reliable voting blocs.

Yet, many Black Americans have expressed our frustration that our communities continue to face economic inequality, healthcare disparities, underfunded schools and barriers to voting, despite, that loyalty.

The NAACP appears to be betting that political participation remains one of the strongest tools available for influencing public policy.

And as a self-professed political junkie, I'd like to say that I agree!

Politics is power and we can't get power unless we play the game, too.

Now, the timing of NAACP's announcement is significant.

Their announcement follows recent court rulings involving voting rights and ongoing litigation over election rules.

In recent months, the NAACP has challenged executive actions affecting mail-in voting, while celebrating court decisions blocking some election-related policies the organization argued would restrict access to the ballot.

The NAACP argues that recent Supreme Court decisions and redistricting battles have weakened protections for African-Americans and other minorities that were once guaranteed under the Voting Rights Act.

Whether Americans agree with the NAACP's political positions or not, $20 million is a substantial investment for a nonprofit advocacy organization.

It signals that civil rights groups definitely view the 2026 midterms as unusually consequential.

Historically, turnout drops significantly during midterm elections compared with presidential elections.

This documentary is powerful and really opened my eyes to what goes on when in the background to really create a movement that mobilize African-Americans to get out and vote.

I tried to find the full documentary, Love, Joy and Power: Tools for Liberation but I couldn't find it on YouTube where I, originally, watched it. I want to say Joy Reid and Roland Martin hosted the watch party on their YouTube channels. I believe it's on Kweli TV and, possibly, Tubi.

I don't usually promote Tubi because it's owned by the racist Fox Corporation and we must be careful what we consume.

NAACP's organized voter outreach can have an outsized impact, particularly in competitive congressional districts where a few thousand votes can determine the outcome.

The NAACP's announcement also highlights a broader trend in American politics.

Political organizations increasingly recognize that elections are not won only through television ads.

They are won through organizing, neighborhood outreach, digital engagement and convincing people who might otherwise stay home to cast a ballot.

In other words, it's all about the ground game.

Knocking on doors, speaking to people in the community, phone banking, donating money and more!

The NAACP says its campaign is intended to protect voting rights while encouraging civic participation in communities it believes have been disproportionately affected by recent legal and political changes.

The 2026 midterms are still months away.

But, if the NAACP is willing to make the largest midterm investment in its history, it suggests the organization believes the stakes are higher than ever.

Whether that investment changes turnout or election outcomes will ultimately be decided at the ballot box in November.

I dragged my 19 year old with me for the Maryland primaries and we'll be going together to vote in the General election.

Pick up your Grandma, Grandpa, cousins, make sure people who don't have a ride, can get a ride. Offer to take them to drop off their mail-in ballot.

Become a poll worker or election volunteer in your state.

Many jurisdictions face poll worker shortages, especially during midterm elections.

Attend local candidate forums and town halls to ask questions about issues that matter to your community.

Vote early, if you can, to make sure you give enough time for any issues that might arise. Trump and his regime will be doing everything possible to try to stop us from voting.
