The 2026 — 2027 Super El Niño climate phenomena is here. Temperatures over 100° will occur in Arizona, Nevada, California (inland), Utah, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, the inland portions of the 14 southern states, & Kansas this Summer.

The previous major instance of this weather phenomenon in 1997 claimed more than 20,000 lives, and destroyed 100,000 homes by storms winds and rains in the US. This year’s event has been identified as the most severe in over 140 years. Economic losses in 1997 exceeded $16.3 billion in today’s dollars, which ultimately reached an estimated $112 billion over the ensuing 5 years. Sea surface temperatures in the Pacific exceeded 2°C during the 1997 — 1998 El Niño event.

The current 2026 El Niño is projected to be among the strongest on record, with sea surface temperatures in the Pacific from the West coast of the Americas to the East coast of Sumatra, an area of 5,000 miles long, measured temperatures twice as high at 4.7°C. Damage will be 5 to 10 times higher than in 1997.

It is feared this year’s event will approach a trillion dollars in damage, with the loss of life rising to 80,000 — 90,000 over the subsequent 5 year duration of its effects. Destruction of marine life is will be severe among shore birds and Pinnipeds, due to the loss of the fish they feed on. Coral bleeching and the loss of coastal seaweed forests will be severe.

The increased frequency and intensity of Atmospheric rivers will damage flood control systems and overwhelm rivers, streams, dams and reservoirs. Overtopping of earth-filled dams by intense down-pours is especially likely.

Preparation is advised for the scale of the coming weather events. Maintain a rotating supply of at least a week’s supply of food and water. High winds, rain, and storms will hamper transportation over roads and highways. Loss of electricity and Internet in local areas is to be expected. Maintain a ½ tank of gas in cars, and 50% battery power levels in EV’s. Obtain a portable solar and power storage facility, to maintain refrigeration of frozen food supplies during local power outages. If periods of dangerous temperatures (85°+) are likely, obtain a small AC unit to cool a small interior, or East facing room during power outages that may last over several days.

Make preparations for the elderly and special needs individuals. Establish a regular method of checking on their welfare. Outside animals are at greater risk during extreme weather events, such as flooding, fires and heat. Protective eye masks may be needed in high winds. Water supplies and feed may need extra protection.
