Budget 2026: Building Capacity Over Short-Term Comfort

After going through the Budget in detail, I see it as less of an annual financial exercise and more of a 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲. The message is clear, India wants to expand its productive muscle rather than rely only on consumption-led growth.

The emphasis on 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵, 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 signals a shift from “India as a market” to “India as a maker and innovator.” That is an encouraging narrative for businesses planning long-term investments.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀

𝟭. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 Focused interventions in biopharma, semiconductors, electronics, textiles, capital goods, and rare earth ecosystems show intent to build real capabilities. These are sectors that create high-value jobs and reduce critical import dependency.

𝟮. 𝗠𝗦𝗠𝗘𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 Liquidity support through TReDS, dedicated growth funds, and stronger integration with procurement platforms can genuinely help small enterprises scale. If this works on the ground, it could unlock enormous entrepreneurial energy.

𝟯. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 Investments in freight corridors, waterways, urban economic regions, and high-speed connectivity will improve logistics efficiency and open new markets beyond metros. This is critical for cost competitiveness.

𝟰. 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 Medical tourism, design, creative industries, and digital infrastructure are being treated as growth engines, not side stories. India is being positioned as a knowledge and innovation hub, not just a back office.

𝟱. 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 Simpler tax procedures, decriminalisation of minor defaults, customs automation, and trust-based systems reduce friction for compliant businesses.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀

1. 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 Ambitious schemes need equally agile institutions and Centre and State coordination.

2. 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 The Budget is supply-heavy; near-term consumption stimulus could have balanced it better.

3. 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻 New sectors like semicon, biotech, and advanced manufacturing need talent at a pace faster than current capacity.

4. 𝗠𝗦𝗠𝗘 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 Funding helps, but simplification must be deeper.

5. 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 Export assumptions will be tested by trade volatility and protectionism.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗧 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 For technology companies, this Budget quietly opens a large opportunity. A more predictable framework for IT services, faster approval mechanisms, and the push toward 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀, 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗚𝗲𝗠–𝗧𝗥𝗲𝗗𝗦 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗦𝗠𝗘 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 expand the addressable market.

Enterprise tech is no longer a support function, it is becoming 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Organisations building ERPs, AI-driven platforms, analytics, and sector-specific digital solutions will be at the centre of this transformation. The real winners will be firms that combine domain understanding with technology, helping businesses become compliant, connected, and efficient rather than just automated.

𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 • Invest in capability and digital maturity, not just capacity. • Finance–supply chain–technology integration will define competitiveness. • Tier II & III India will drive the next wave of growth. • Partnerships across industry, startups, academia will matter more than ever.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 This Budget chooses the harder path, long-term capacity over short-term applause. Policies can create possibilities; enterprises must convert them into outcomes.
