“What It’s Like to Be a Pharmacy Student in Pakistan — My Honest Journey”

I’m a third-year Doctor of Pharmacy student in Lahore, Pakistan. Pharmacy isn’t just about medicines — it’s about understanding how science helps people live healthier lives. In this post, I want to share my journey so far: what I’ve learned, the challenges I’ve faced, and why I believe pharmacy is one of the most powerful and underappreciated professions in healthcare.

Why I Chose Pharmacy?

To be honest, I didn’t always dream of becoming a pharmacist. But over time, I realized that this profession is at the heart of healthcare. We are the bridge between doctors and patients. We don’t just hand out medicines — we understand how those medicines work inside the body, their side effects, and how to prevent dangerous interactions.

Studying pharmacy has made me respect science more than ever. Every chapter I study connects to real lives — and that keeps me going.

The Academic Pressure is Real

Pharmacy is tough — not just in Pakistan, but globally. People think we only study drug names, but our subjects range from human anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, microbiology, and even law and ethics. Every semester feels like a marathon, and sometimes you barely catch your breath before the next starts.

Exams, lab reports, assignments, and the race to maintain a good GPA can feel overwhelming. But what keeps me going is the purpose behind all this knowledge.

My First Internship Experience

One of the best parts of this journey has been working as an intern at a retail pharmacy. That’s where theory finally met practice. I got to interact with patients, understand how real prescriptions are handled, and observe how important a pharmacist’s advice can be — especially in Pakistan, where people often self-medicate.

Internships taught me more than any textbook ever could.

What I’ve Learned (Beyond Books)

• Patience is power. Pharmacy is a long journey. You need endurance.
• Communication is key. A pharmacist must know how to explain things clearly to patients.
• The healthcare system needs us. Pharmacists reduce medication errors and educate patients. We are essential.

My Advice to New Students

If you’re starting pharmacy or thinking about it, know this: it’s not an “easy backup” to MBBS. It’s a science-heavy, responsibility-filled profession. But if you’re passionate about healthcare, it’s incredibly rewarding.

Build good habits, seek internships early, stay curious, and never underestimate your value in the health system.
