I Hate Being a Woman

I hate being a woman. Just as it sounds. This statement may seem like a personal opinion, but I was taught to hate the gender I was born into.

This goes beyond gender inequality; I have internalized the hatred of being a woman. Many times, I have asked myself why. Why did humiliating the opposite sex become normalized, and why did people come to feel proud or powerful for doing so? At what point did we allow others to claim that solidarity among women is false, that we are snakes waiting to stab each other in the back? Who said that? And when did we start believing it to the point of making it our own and turning it into reality?

I hate being a woman when I begin to feel even the slightest gratitude for it, only for it all to come crashing down the moment I open my phone. I see two kinds of advertisements for menstrual products. Some tell me that this one is the best because it will keep me clean and ready to do whatever I want. And I wonder: am I not already clean? Is my nature somehow wrong? Is my body, which was made as a way of sustaining human life, somehow bad? Am I only made for that? And what if I want to be more than that?

Then there are the other advertisements, the ones that insist that pain is not an obstacle, that I can do anything. But why can’t I express discomfort or pain? Why do they call me weak? Why do I have to accept it simply because biology says so? Am I merely an experiment meant to demonstrate how far my physical performance can and should go?

Why does everything fall apart when I try to love myself? Why, when I try, do I end up humiliated and hating something I never had the chance to choose?

It is because of all these questions that I find it impossible to claim that this way of thinking is natural. On the contrary, I am convinced that we were taught to see it this way. We were raised within a system that never saw women as equals, but rather as objects meant to satisfy needs, from the most carnal to the most structural.

When I speak of a system, I do not mean a single institution or one specific culprit. I am speaking of a patriarchal structure that has shaped, for centuries, the way we understand the world and our place within it. This structure manifests itself through education, family, religion, the media, politics, and everyday relationships. Over time, these ideas stop being perceived as impositions and begin to appear as natural truths. Once they become institutions, they become culture; and once they become culture, they are reproduced generation after generation without the need for constant justification.

When the system recognized the need for women to work in order to increase production, domestic labor did not disappear — it simply doubled. When men were sent to war, women occupied jobs considered less important in order to fill a temporary need. Women were even used as forms of entertainment to distract soldiers. Modernity and the rise of the industrial world came with a silent but persistent idea: that women should remain secondary characters within a system built by and for men.

And through all of this, I was taught to accept it. Just as I did, thousands of women did as well. Not because we are less intelligent, but because there was a process of internalization so deep that once the system becomes our own, it ceases to be questioned.

But what am I when I question it? What am I when I am tired of feeling like I cannot discuss politics in front of men? Am I too argumentative if I do? Will no one want a woman who speaks too much? Must I make myself smaller in order to be accepted?

If all of that is what the system says makes me a woman, then I am not one.

I am not a WOMAN.

Muchas veces me he preguntado por qué.

Y me pregunto: ¿acaso no soy limpia?

Yo no soy MUJER.
