A Tour Shows You Africa. An Experience Connects You to It.

One of the quickest ways to get me to correct someone is when they describe what we do at Danfo as a “tour.”

I understand why people say it.

It’s the easiest word available.

But it never quite feels right.

Because a tour implies observation.

An experience implies participation.

And those are two very different things.

The older I get, the more I realize that meaningful travel isn’t about how many landmarks you visit or how many passport stamps you collect.

It’s about connection.

It’s about allowing a place to leave an imprint on you.

And if you’re open enough, allowing yourself to leave with a different understanding of the world than the one you arrived with.

That’s what we’re trying to create at Danfo.

Africa Is Not A Theme Park

One of the challenges with modern travel is that we’ve turned much of the world into a collection of attractions.

People fly into a country.

Take photos.

Check boxes.

Post content.

And leave.

But culture doesn’t reveal itself that way.

You can’t understand a place through the window of a tour bus.

You can’t understand people by observing them from a distance.

You have to participate.

You have to engage.

You have to be willing to be uncomfortable sometimes.

Not unsafe.

Just uncomfortable enough to grow.

The Most Meaningful Moments Are Never Planned

Some of my favorite memories traveling throughout Africa weren’t the famous sites.

They weren’t monuments.

They weren’t museums.

They weren’t even on the itinerary.

They happened sitting in local restaurants.

Walking through crowded markets.

Sharing meals with people I had met only hours before.

Spending time in villages and communities where life moved at a different pace.

Listening more than talking.

Learning more than teaching.

Those moments taught me something important:

People are often far more interesting than places.

And relationships are what make destinations memorable.

Years later, I don’t always remember every monument.

But I remember the conversations.

I remember the laughter.

I remember the hospitality.

I remember the humanity.

When In Rome, Do As The Romans Do

There’s an old saying:

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

I think that’s one of the most important principles in travel.

If we’re in Senegal, let’s eat thieboudienne.

If we’re in Nigeria, let’s embrace the energy.

If we’re in Benin, let’s explore the markets.

If we’re in Sierra Leone, let’s spend time in the communities.

Travel becomes richer when we stop asking places to adapt to us and start allowing ourselves to adapt to them.

Not permanently.

Just long enough to understand another perspective.

Getting Out Of Our Comfort Zones

Many people arrive in Africa carrying invisible baggage.

Not luggage.

Assumptions.

Years of media narratives.

Negative stereotypes.

Fear of the unknown.

And I understand it.

For decades, Africa has been presented to the world through a narrow lens.

Conflict.

Poverty.

Crisis.

Rarely joy.

Rarely beauty.

Rarely normalcy.

So people arrive with their guards up.

But something incredible happens when those walls come down.

People begin to relax.

They begin to connect.

And they realize that despite our different languages, passports, and backgrounds, most people want the same things:

Purpose.

Community.

Opportunity.

Family.

Dignity.

Travel Should Transform You
