Heroes (9–11 Art/Painting)

I grew up around museums and galleries since I was young. One of the Manhattan-based galleries that always caught my attention during my art school days was the **Society of Illustrators**. If you were a graduating senior and good enough at art school, they would highlight you in their annual publications. I would go there a lot and look at the many pieces of art displayed on the walls wondering what would it take to get a piece of art exhibited there.

Before 9–11, my biggest worry was just being a college kid, graduating and contributing to society, like any normal person. After 9–11, I realized what it means to be in the real world and how to navigate in it.

Not too long after the attacks, the Society of Illustrators promoted an upcoming show called ‘Prevailing Human Spirit’ and the call for entries was announced. Regardless of feeling very unsure, I answered the call and created a piece. It was a painting, titled ‘Heroes’ — based on the FDNY. I remember picking it up at the framing shop and seeing it proudly standing on an easel in the store’s window display. I finally submitted it to the Society of Illustrators for them to make the decision.

It was the ONLY time I ever had a piece of art exhibited at the gallery.

While being proud of the achievement, I don’t remember telling every person I knew about it. 20+ years after the September 11th attacks and making the gallery show, the painting remains in my garage along with other pieces. I look at it often and think back to those chaotic events, to try and not to take each day for granted, while giving me personal confidence in taking a chance to create better days ahead.
