There Is Nothing Quite Like Seeing Your Writing Published In Print

Back when I was in university, I wrote a short nonfiction piece of writing based on my experience working behind the counter of a fast food joint when I was in twelfth grade. It had been my first job (besides babysitting). The place was a lesser known rival to the now well-known **Chipotle Mexican Grill**. The whole experience left an impression on me that I felt I needed to share with the world.

The following is the short story, published in the 2013 spring edition of ***The Innis Review***:

When the volume was released, the university publication held a small gathering for all the editors and the writers whose work had appeared in the journal. At the event, they handed out print versions of the small booklet, and it was a special kind of feeling to see my words written out in physical, tangible form.

I’ve kept it to this day, pulling it out whenever I’m in need of a boost of motivation to keep doing what I do. I store it in the basement, in a giant box full of all my written and published works. Most of the items in the box consist of regular notebooks filled with my stories from grade school — before I started typing up all my stories. But there are a few — like this one — that are of my published work.

I love seeing my words written out in print form. There’s just something magical about it. And similarly, I’m looking forward to having my stories published in print anthologies next to other amazing writers and bound together in short story collections that people can physically pick up and read. It gives me great joy to know that I’m providing value through the written word.

The location where the story takes place — the Mexican grill — has long since been demolished due to the seemingly endless rise of the new condo building in midtown Toronto. But wherever Manna is now, I know she is working as hard as ever to support her family.

I have, of course, changed her name to protect her anonymity.
