Your Shopify Store Has 6 Types of Customers — Here’s How to Email Each One

Stop sending the same email to everyone. Your customers are telling you what they need — you just have to look.

Here’s something most Shopify store owners get wrong about email marketing: they treat every customer the same.

Same welcome flow. Same discount. Same “we miss you” email — sent to someone who bought yesterday and someone who hasn’t opened your store in 8 months.

The fix isn’t a better subject line or a fancier template. It’s knowing who you’re talking to.

Your store already has 6 types of customers

Every store, no matter the size, has these segments hiding in the order data:

1. New — First-time buyers. They just took a chance on you. This is the largest group for most stores.

What to send: A thank-you that doesn’t immediately ask for more money. Delivery updates. A “here’s how to get the most out of what you bought” email. Build trust before you sell again.

2. Potential Loyal — They’ve bought 2–3 times recently. They like you but aren’t committed yet.

What to send: Early access to new products. A small loyalty perk. “Customers who bought X also loved Y” recommendations. This is where you turn a repeat buyer into a fan.

3. Loyal — Your best people. They buy frequently, spend the most, and they’re still active.

What to send: VIP treatment. Exclusive offers they can’t get anywhere else. Ask them for reviews — they’ll actually write them. Ask for referrals. These people are your unpaid marketing team.

4. Loyal at Risk — They used to be loyal, but they’ve gone quiet.

What to send: This is your highest-ROI email. A personal “we noticed you’ve been away” message. Don’t lead with a discount — lead with genuine curiosity. “Is everything okay with your last order?” works better than “Here’s 15% off.”

5. About to Sleep — Infrequent buyers who haven’t ordered recently.

What to send: A compelling reason to come back. A new product announcement. A limited-time offer. Keep it to one email — if they don’t bite, move them to the last group.

6. Dormant — Haven’t bought in a long time. Low order count. Probably gone.

What to send: One last “break-up” email. “We’re cleaning up our list — want to stay?” If no response, stop emailing them. A smaller, engaged list beats a large, dead one.

“Great, but how do I know who’s who?”

This is based on something called RFM analysis — it scores customers on three things: how Recently they bought, how Frequently they buy, and how much Money they spend. Combine the three and you get clean segments.

Shopify actually has a version of this buried in Analytics → Reports → Customer reports. Most store owners have never opened it. Go check yours — it takes 30 seconds and you’ll immediately see how many customers are slipping away.

The problem is, Shopify’s built-in reports don’t update automatically, don’t sync with your email tools, and don’t tag customers. So you’d have to check it manually every week and export CSVs to actually do anything with the data.

That’s why I built **RetainPulse** — it runs RFM analysis on your store automatically, tags each customer with their segment, and those tags sync straight to Klaviyo, Shopify Email, or whatever you use. No CSV exports, no manual work.

But honestly, even if you never install an app, just opening that Shopify report once will change how you think about your email list. Start there.
