Around the world, across all cultures there exist tales of cryptids many of which are just as mysterious as they are terrifying. There are places around the world where man has barely set foot in. Locations that would make the perfect hiding place for something to hide from human eyes after all this time.

And what better place than the Amazon rain forest?

The Amazon legend of Mapinguari

In the Brazilian rain forest, there are stories passed down from generation to generation of a large hairy beast that hides in the heart of the Amazon. Those that claim to have seen it describe it as an ape-like creature while others claim it to be more sloth-like with thick, long reddish-brown fur, massive lethal claws, and a flat snout.

The stories passed down warn of a creature to be feared as it shakes the earth and snaps roots of trees with each step it takes.

Mapinguari is also known as Amazon’s version of Bigfoot as some stories describe it as an ape-like creature.

The legends passed down get even more bizarre with some stories describing the massive beast having a single eye much like that of a cyclops and a mouth with rows of sharp teeth on its stomach.

If this beast couldn’t be any more formidable, this massive single eyed creature is said to have incredibly thick skin much like that of a crocodile but tougher. Skin so tough, not even bullets can harm it. That doesn’t sound like a creature you’d want to mess with!

It’s screams are like that of a low thunder that echos throughout the rain forest. Others have said its screams sound more human like.

If you don’t see or hear maniguari, then you will surely smell it! Legend tells of a stench so strong, it has the power to render a person unconscious.

The origin of mapinguari?

As bizarre looking as mapinguari sounds, one might wonder how tales of this cryptid came to be.

A curse

Some say the mapiguari wasn’t always a cryptid but the result of a Shaman curse. There once was a holy man who became greedy and wanted to be immortal. When he found the secret to immortality. The gods of the rain forest were so angry at him that as punishment, they cursed and transformed him into a terrifying monster.

A real animal

There is a possibility that this creature might be more than a myth and based on a real creature that once roamed the earth. The descriptions of the stories passed down very much describe the giant ground sloth, which coincided with humans until going extinct at the end of the last ice age. And many cryptozoologists agree with this theory.

Is it a possibility that the stories of mapinguari are really sightings of the giant ground sloth?

Much larger than the sloths we know today, the giant ground sloth was not only one of the most bizarre creatures to ever roam the earth but one of the largest. It makes you wonder the tales told as humans saw this creature for themselves. And then over time, those stories evolved into the terrifying cryptid known as mapinguari.

One can only wonder what sort of creatures hide in the heart of the Amazon? If you ever find yourself in the heart of the Amazon, be warned. You just might cross paths with mapinguari!
