One Year After Hernia Surgery: What Recovery Really Felt Like
A year ago, I wasn’t asking when I’d get back to combat sports. I was asking whether I’d ever get back at all.
I’d already been through multiple hernia surgeries, including a recurrence after returning to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This latest operation was performed by a specialist, and while I felt optimistic, I also knew there were no guarantees. I had learned the hard way that being “healed” and being ready for sport are not the same thing.
Now, one year later, I’m back boxing several times a week, strength training, and gradually pushing myself in ways that once seemed impossible. Looking back, a few lessons stand out.

There Was Never a Magic Day
I kept waiting for the day when everything would suddenly feel normal again.
It never happened.
Instead, recovery came in tiny increments. One week I realized I hadn’t thought about my surgery all day. A few weeks later, I noticed I was moving more naturally. Months later, I found myself throwing combinations on the heavy bag without worrying about every movement.
Progress wasn’t dramatic. It was gradual enough that I often didn’t notice it until I looked back.
Recovery Isn’t Just Physical
The physical healing was only part of the process. Learning to trust the repair again was just as important.
Every unfamiliar sensation made me wonder if something had gone wrong. Every new exercise raised the question of whether I was pushing too hard.
Over time, those fears slowly faded. They weren’t replaced by certainty, but by confidence built through hundreds of successful training sessions.
Things Still Feel Different
Even after a year, the area doesn’t feel exactly the way it did before surgery.
There are still occasional odd sensations, mild tightness, or moments when I’m reminded that I’ve had multiple operations.
I’ve come to accept that this isn’t failure. It’s simply part of having undergone major surgery.
Success isn’t measured by whether everything feels exactly as it did before. It’s measured by whether I can live my life, train, and enjoy the activities I love.
Boxing Was the Right Choice
Returning through boxing turned out to be one of the best decisions I made.
Unlike many sports, boxing lets me control the pace almost completely. Some days I focus on footwork. Other days I work the heavy bag, mitts, or conditioning. If something doesn’t feel right, I can adjust immediately.
That flexibility allowed me to rebuild confidence without feeling like I had to go from zero to one hundred overnight.
Recovery Doesn’t Really End
Although I’m fully back to training, I’ve realized that some habits are probably permanent now.
I continue to prioritize core strengthening, hip mobility, recovery, sleep, and nutrition. I pay close attention to training volume and try to avoid making the same mistakes that contributed to my earlier recurrence.
Those habits aren’t restrictions anymore. They’re simply part of how I train.
Looking Forward
If you’re recovering from surgery, it can feel like progress is painfully slow.
My advice is simple: don’t judge your recovery one day at a time.
Judge it over months.
The body is remarkably good at adapting when it’s given time, intelligent training, and patience.
One year later, I’m stronger, more disciplined, and more appreciative of every workout than I was before surgery.
That’s not the outcome I expected.
It’s a better one.
