He Was Never Speaking to My Mind

Why Jesus spoke to the heart — and what that means for his gospel of the Kingdom.

I had discovered that Jesus preached a gospel of the Kingdom. But I couldn’t grasp what he was actually pointing to.

From that time, for over eight years, I kept repeating the same prayer — quietly, persistently, sometimes desperately: “Oh God, give me clarity.”

The Kingdom is at hand. Among you. Within you. I had heard those words countless times. I had studied them, prayed over them, fasted over them. I had read biblical scholars and religious thinkers across multiple traditions. All of it sincere. All of it faithful. And yet the Kingdom remained just out of reach — like a language I was learning but couldn’t quite speak.

What I didn’t yet understand was that I was using the wrong instrument entirely.

Last week I wrote about refusing to remain in the guilt-based gospel. This essay is the first step into moving on to a new story.

The Thought That Stopped Me

Then one day, out of nowhere, a thought rose in me — quiet at first, then unmistakable:

If we’re really tracking with Jesus, we’ve missed something essential. Jesus spoke to the heart.

I paused with it. Something about it felt not new but deeply familiar — like a recognition rather than a discovery. I let it move through me without rushing to analyze it, sensing that it belonged somewhere deeper than my thinking mind could reach.

And slowly, something began to shift.

I had spent decades engaging Jesus’ teaching the way I had been taught to engage everything — through the intellect. Through study, through prayer, through careful theological reasoning. These were not wrong practices. They were faithful ones. But I was listening to heart-language with my mind. And the mind, however sincere, is simply not the instrument Jesus was speaking to.

The Heart — The Instrument Jesus Was Always Using

Here is what I began to discover — and what reoriented everything.

In Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke, there is no equivalent for mind or brain as we understand those words today. Intellect wasn’t superior to feeling. Thinking and knowing weren’t two separate things living in different rooms.

In Jesus’ world everything started in the heart first — an idea, a memory, a sense of direction. The heart was where life was oriented from.

To Jesus and his listeners the heart was simply everything. It was where you knew things before you could explain them. Where you remembered things that mattered. Where your inner life found its true direction.

And Jesus — gently, consistently, without ever announcing it as a new teaching — was showing us that we needed to return to that original setting. To restart something that had drifted. To trust again what we already carried within.

What Science Quietly Confirmed About the Heart

I found it quietly remarkable that modern science is now confirming what Jesus lived by all along.

Research from HeartMath Institute has shown that the heart carries its own intelligence — processing information independently of the brain, and actually sending more signals upward to the brain than it receives. It has its own memory. Its own way of knowing.

Which means when Jesus spoke to the heart he wasn’t reaching for a poetic image. He was addressing the most reliable instrument in the room.

The mind can examine truth. But the heart — it recognizes it.

Once I saw that I finally understood why eight years of earnest seeking had left me circling the same questions. I had been trying to think my way into something that could only be felt from within.

When the Heart Receives What the Mind Cannot

When I stopped leading with my intellect and began returning to the heart — something loosened.

Not dramatically. Not all at once. But the striving quieted. The prayer for clarity became a thank you for it. Not because everything was suddenly resolved but because I had finally found the right place to stand.

The heart is that place. And this — I began to understand — is exactly where Jesus was pointing all along. Not to doctrine. Not to moral improvement. Not to the guilt-laden version of faith many of us inherited. But to the heart — this quiet, trustworthy, original place within.

The story that begins in the heart is a very different story from the one the guilt-based gospel tells. It doesn’t begin with what’s wrong with you. It begins with what was always right — and waiting.

That is the new story. And it starts here.

The Drifting and the Returning

There are still moments when I drift — back into my head, back into analysis, back into the old habit of trying to reason my way toward the Kingdom. That is simply what it means to be human. But I am no longer troubled by those moments of drifting and forgetting. I have learned to turn within with quiet confidence — knowing that what I’m returning to was never lost.

How to make that return — practically, in the ordinary moments of an ordinary day — is where the next essay begins. And it starts with something so simple it almost seems too easy.

If something in this stirred a question or a recognition — I’d love to hear it in the comments.
