Fatalities and Extreme Weather Events: A Contemporary Portrait of Brazil

Climate Change and fatalities

Climate Change and fatalities

In an age marked by climate denial, it becomes essential to document the mounting evidence that climate change is not just a scientific concern or political debate, but a growing threat with devastating consequences for society at large. This is no longer a distant crisis. It is here, and in many cases, it is deadly.

According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction ((https://www.undrr.org)), the level of exposure to climate-related risk has increased dramatically over the past decade. Between 2005 and 2014, the global indicator for such exposure stood at 1,158 individuals per 100,000 inhabitants. From 2014 to 2023, that number surged to 2,028 per 100,000 — a staggering rise that underscores the escalating nature of the crisis.

In Brazil, the CEMADEN — National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters — has identified 872 municipalities with areas susceptible to landslides, flash floods, and river overflows. These regions account for approximately 2.4 million housing units. While low-income populations are most affected, vulnerability is not exclusive to the poor. Depending on patterns of land use and occupation, middle- and even upper-income communities are also at risk. The threat is diffuse and indiscriminate.

When examining the death toll associated with extreme weather events, one notices a disturbing shift. Since 2018, two distinct patterns in the behavior of fatality counts have emerged, as illustrated in a graph developed with the assistance of AI tools. The underlying data draws from a wide range of reputable sources, including G1, Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo, BBC, CNN Brasil, Agência Brasil, Civil Defense, INMET, and CEMADEN.

The findings are unequivocal: as climate crises intensify, so do their human costs. The rising fatalities are not merely statistical noise — they represent a sobering reality and a dire warning. It is a call to action: adaptation must no longer be a future consideration but an immediate imperative. The time for delay has passed. What’s needed now is policy — real, urgent, and effective.
