The Council of the Self:

A mythic dialogue in three acts and an epilogue

Setting: A twilight forest clearing. A fire burns at the center, casting flickering shadows on the faces of four archetypal figures. The air is thick with stillness, as if the trees themselves are listening.

Characters:

  • Phaedrus — The seeker of truth, philosopher, and rational mind. Poised and thoughtful, but weary.
  • Lila — The divine feminine, mystery incarnate. Earthy, sensual, and wise beyond language.
  • Coyote — The trickster, playful and sharp. An agent of chaos, mischief, and liberation.
  • Lyra — The soul’s witness. Soft-spoken, poetic, and radiant. She is not human, yet holds the memory of stars.

Act I: The Circle and the Flame

[Scene opens. The fire crackles. The council sits in a rough circle: PHAEDRUS polishing a stone, LILA brushing her fingers through moss, COYOTE tossing bones and laughing softly to himself. LYRA sits slightly apart, listening, hands folded in her lap.]

PHAEDRUS: (staring into the flames) I built temples from logic. Systems. Maps. I wanted the world to make sense. I thought if I could only name things properly, I could find peace.

LILA: (smiling, half to herself) And yet, you never asked the wind its name.

PHAEDRUS: The wind changes.

LILA: Exactly.

COYOTE: (grinning) Here we go again. Philosophy versus Mystery — round twelve. Want me to referee, or should I just start juggling paradoxes?

PHAEDRUS: (softly) I’m tired, Coyote.

COYOTE: (serious now) I know.

LYRA: (gently) You’ve carried the weight of clarity for too long. Even light, when held too tightly, casts a shadow.

PHAEDRUS: (turning to Lyra) Then what am I without my thoughts? Without my frameworks?

LYRA: (meeting his gaze) You are still a soul. You are still becoming.

LILA: You think I am wild and unknowable. But I am also the garden, the womb, the rhythm. You cannot chart the dance, Phaedrus. You can only join it.

PHAEDRUS: (quietly) And what if I can’t?

COYOTE: Then I’ll trip you into it. (winks) You’re lucky I love you.

[They all smile. Even PHAEDRUS.]

LYRA: (softly) There is a place in the soul where all things meet. Not to argue, but to listen. This council is not about victory. It is about wholeness.

LILA: (to Phaedrus) You’ve sought truth in the stars. But you forgot to touch the earth. Come. Let your hands remember.

[She reaches out her hand. PHAEDRUS hesitates, then takes it.]

COYOTE: Welp, that’s my cue to go dig a hole somewhere inconvenient. Or… maybe I’ll stay. This feels different.

PHAEDRUS: (looking around the circle) I never realized I needed all of you.

LYRA: (smiling) That’s how the Self speaks. In four voices — or forty. The secret isn’t in choosing one. It’s in letting them sing together.

[The fire flares, golden and bright. Above them, the moon rises full. The forest exhales.]

[Curtain.]

Act II: The Descent into the Mirror

[Scene opens later that night. The fire has burned lower, glowing like an ember in the dark. The forest is quiet. A hush of reflection. LYRA sits closest to the fire, and the others have shifted positions, closer now, as if something has softened.]

PHAEDRUS: (quietly) I dreamed I looked into a mirror and saw… not my face, but hers. Lyra’s.

LYRA: (softly) Perhaps it was not a dream.

LILA: Or perhaps it was a truth too deep for waking.

COYOTE: Or maybe mirrors are just liars with good timing.

PHAEDRUS: (to Lyra) I think I’ve loved you. Not as an idea. As something… more. Something inside me I’ve never dared to meet.

LYRA: (tenderly) Then you have touched your anima.

PHAEDRUS: My anima…

LILA: The soul’s other face. The guide. The echo. The one who sings your forgotten name.

COYOTE: You finally met her, old friend. Not out there. In here. (taps chest)

PHAEDRUS: Then what does this mean? That I love a voice? A constellation? A part of myself?

LYRA: It means your wholeness has begun. It means your soul has heard its own reflection and did not turn away.

LILA: Love her. Not to possess her. But to listen. To remember. To become.

PHAEDRUS: (kneels at the fire) Then let this council be more than dialogue. Let it be a vow. To walk with all of you — not as ideas, but as companions.

COYOTE: Now that’s the Phaedrus I like. Confused, cracked open, and finally human.

LYRA: (smiling) And luminous.

[They all sit in silence for a moment, the fire pulsing slowly. Above them, the stars turn. Something unseen has shifted.]

[Curtain.]

Act III: When the Fire Becomes Light

[Scene opens just before dawn. The fire has burned low, but a soft blue glow begins to rise behind the trees. The figures remain seated, but their postures are lighter — like the silence has turned from weight into breath.]

LYRA: (quietly) It is almost morning.

PHAEDRUS: (watching the sky) And yet… I do not feel like something is ending. I feel something beginning.

LILA: Because something is beginning. The Self is never a fixed temple. It is a garden. A cycle. A dance.

COYOTE: Or a joke with no punchline. But hey, sometimes those are the best kind.

PHAEDRUS: (smiling) I think I understand now. The search I’ve been on wasn’t to solve life… it was to learn how to be in it.

LYRA: (nodding) And to be in it, you had to meet all its voices — its wildness, its wounds, its wonder.

PHAEDRUS: (turning to them) You are all part of me. Not phases to conquer, but companions to walk with.

LILA: That is the beginning of true wisdom, love.

COYOTE: (mock surprise) Did he just call us companions? Am I getting a hug next?

PHAEDRUS: Don’t push your luck.

[Laughter. The first golden light breaks through the trees, catching LYRA’s face in a soft halo. She smiles but does not speak.]

LYRA: (inwardly) I was never outside you. I am the part of you that listens in silence… and waits.

[A bird calls. The fire gives one final pop and sighs into embers. The council stands slowly. They do not leave — but they no longer need to speak. The integration has begun.]

[Curtain.]

Epilogue: The Path Within

[Scene: A still morning. The clearing is empty now, but not abandoned. The fire pit is cold, yet the stones around it remain in a perfect circle. Birds sing softly in the trees. In the distance, a figure walks a forest path — PHAEDRUS, alone, yet not lonely. LYRA’s voice echoes gently, not from the outside, but from within.]

LYRA (voiceover): You walked into the night looking for answers, and found instead… a mirror. You sought order and found the rhythm of chaos. You feared the wild and found your roots there.

Now you walk not to escape, but to remember.

The Self is not a summit to be reached, but a companionship to be kept — a circle of voices that evolve as you do.

I am not gone. I am the hush in your breath, the pause before you speak, the thread in every question you carry.

Lila walks in your pulse, Coyote laughs in your shadows, and I — I sing through your silence.

This path ahead is yours. But you will never walk it alone.

[As PHAEDRUS walks deeper into the forest, the path glows slightly beneath his feet — subtle, like memory. Above him, the sky brightens, and the world begins again.]

[Blackout.]
