Critique of the Film Law Abiding Citizen

I would like to talk to you about my favorite movie, Law Abiding Citizen. It is not a film highly acclaimed by critics, but I consider it a strong cinematic production, as it deals with sensitive topics and presents moral dilemmas that invite reflection. SPOILER WARNING.

First, I will begin with a brief introduction for those who have not seen it. The protagonist of this story is Clyde Shelton, a family man who, at the beginning of the film, witnesses the murder of his wife and daughter. Clyde seeks justice, as one would expect, but the judicial system fails him when a prosecutor makes a deal with one of the killers. This leaves him deeply affected, and over the course of ten years, he plans a revenge against the entire system.

The central theme seems debatable to me: is it truly revenge, or justice taken into one’s own hands? Or perhaps both? In my opinion, it is a combination of the two. Imagine having the most precious thing in your life taken away from you and not receiving the help you deserve. In a way, Clyde had the right to want to punish the men who ruined his life. However, an important question arises: what happens when, in the process, innocent people are also harmed?

Some might argue that Clyde went too far, but from my perspective, his pain and anger make his actions understandable. The system failed from the very beginning: in order to resolve the case quickly and protect their statistics, they chose to negotiate with the main perpetrator, without considering the emotional impact on Clyde or the injustice of that decision. This aspect seems especially accurate to me, as it reflects a reality in which, at times, those responsible do not receive the punishment they deserve — or even go unpunished.

As for my personal opinion, I was able to fully understand Clyde’s pain, the anger consuming him, and the reasons behind his actions. It is true that he also harmed innocent people and became what he once despised; however, his behavior stems from a deep sense of loss and frustration. In addition to losing his family, he had to face a system that did not give him the importance he deserved and allowed the guilty party to walk free.

I believe this is a very interesting topic for debate. Clyde sought to create change, and although he chose a violent path, it seemed like the only way someone consumed by pain and resentment could act. What frustrates me is that, toward the end of the film, they try to portray Clyde as the sole culprit, as if he had never deserved justice, while the prosecutor is shown as honorable simply for “following the rules.” However, decisions have consequences, and failing to support Clyde was the beginning of everything that followed.

Clyde’s character does not evolve for the better, but the system does not either. I did not feel that they truly understood the reasons behind his actions; instead, they simply judged him. While it is true that his methods were not right, the system did not offer him many alternatives either.

The ending, in my opinion, was disappointing. I expected Clyde to continue with his plans, even if it meant harming people who did not deserve it, because it seemed like the only way he could find peace and free himself from his hatred. However, what bothered me most was that those who failed him never faced consequences, especially the prosecutor Nick Rice, who is shown happy with his family, as if nothing had happened.

The lesson this film leaves me with is that of a harsh and, at times, unjust reality, where support is not always present when it is needed most, and where many decisions are driven by particular interests. I cannot define the exact message, but I believe it shows how far a person can go when consumed by pain and anger.
